Entry Level Designjets

HP make a series of "entry level" Designjet printers. These are intended to be affordable, they will often be cost justified because they:-

- speed up the production and correction of proof copies - 10PS, 20PS and 50PS particularly
- save money on outsourcing print jobs to print shops - 90 and 130.

The 10ps, 20ps and 50ps are strongly related and primarily aimed at pre-press proofing. The DesignJet 30 uses some of the same parts.

The 90, 90r, 130, 130nr are also stongly related - so is the 120 and 120 which is a predecessor to the 130.

The DesignJet 130 is a highly capable 6 colour 24 inch plotter suited to cartography, engineering, photography and pre-press proofing. The DesignJet 30 is a 13 inch A3 version of the same machine more suited to pre-press and photography. Non of the entry level design-jets competes with some of the recent multi-ink photography printers for resolution and colour gamut but nevertheless they do a good job.

There is a common design theme and a lot of common parts and control software across the whole series.

DesignJet 10PS - C7790A

A3+ 13 inch paper path

The name suggests postscript - this is actually supplied as a software RIP running on client PCs and MACs. Optional extra lower 250 sheet tray C7794A.

DesignJet 20PS - C7790B

A3+ 13 inch paper path
6 colour CMYKcm thermal inkjet
2400x1200dpi colour. 600dpi black.
Extra 250 sheet tray supplied as standard
USB and IEEE 1284 parallel port with a JetDirect 610n in an EIO slot

Postscript is supplied as a software RIP running on client PCs and MACs. In the 20PS case the software RIP is appropriate for workgroup use. As compared with the 10PS the printer has an extra tray and the workgroup software.

Automatic closed-loop colour calibration and the HP remote proofing software assure consistency between remote and local prints.

Share colour proofs over the Internet by sending the file to an HP Designjet 10ps, 20ps or 50ps
printer at a different location.

In other words the Designjet 10 / 20 with the extra bells and whistles to act as the heart of a pre-press system.

PCL3-GUI language. Optimized MAc and Windows drivers provide RGB ICC profiles and Apple ColorSync support. The 130gp comes complete with an easy to use Colorimeter with display profiling.
