About the HP LaserJet 4200 / 4300 Series
A series of fast A4 mono laser printers normally aimed at "workgroup"
use (shared in an office). The LJ4200 runs at up to 33 pages per minute
and the LJ4300 at up to 43 pages per minute. Output quality is high
with a resolution of 1200 dpi at full engine speed.
The built in processor and memory on these models offloads tasks from
user computers quickly. Most models are easily shared via a network
using HP JetDirect. Optional additions to the basic printer include a
range of trays, a duplex unit, envelope feeder and even a stacker /
stapler; an accessory not usually available in this price range.

The basic difference between the 4200 and 4300 is the processor which
is a 300MHz device in the slower printer, matched by 48MB of memory. A
350MHz processor and 64MB memory gives the extra page-formatting
capability needed for the LJ4300's speed.
The 4300 also takes a bigger 18,000 page cartridge and has a higher
monthly throughput rating reflecting the higher levels of use expected.
The LJ 4300 ability to handle higher
workloads make it better suited to production tasks like printing
catalogues and newsletters.
As might be expected the fusers are different, a more robust unit is
used in the 4300. As it happens the 4200 fuser had teething problems
with a too-aggressive bend of the foil causing it to delaminate. This
problem was cured some time ago. HP changed the design and its
subsequently been reliable. Otherwise the parts are much the same. the
difference is in the programming of the formatter board.
The LJ4200's predecessor was the LJ 4100
which was significantly slower at 24 ppm. Many users found this sort of
speed adequate however, hence perhaps the split into the 4200 "budget"
and 4300 "premium" range. Other refinements include things like a
gear-driven paper tray lifter instead of spings increasing feed
reliability and the ability to add two optional trays.

The LJ4200 and 4300 were introduced in the US in November 2002. The
range was later extended with the LJ4240, 4250 and 4350, each being a
bit faster and adding features like an embedded JetDirect network
connection.
Recent successors are the LaserJet P4014 /
P4015. Another successor is the
LJ4345MFP digital copier.

An intuitive layout includes a 4x 20 character LCD panel which gives
clear user prompts. Embedded web server and HP Web Jetadmin software on

The LJ4200 is not a copier however one of the successor products the
LJ4345MFP is a digital copier.

Resolution:
True 1200 dpi with HP Fastres and HP Prores. Ultraprecise toner gives
sharp images and moderate photographic ability.

Tray 1:
Multifunction tray for 3x5 to 8.5x14 inch paper (76x127 to 216x355 mm).
Capacity up to 100 sheets. Weights 60 to 200gsm. Heavy media may need
to use the straight- through path to the face-up tray.

2:
Tray 2 built in for standard and some custom paper sizes, A4, A5,
letter etc. Up to 500 sheets of 60 to 120 gsm weight.

3 & 4:
Tray 3 either a 500 sheet option: as for Tray 2 or a 1500 sheet
option: A4, letter and legal paper with weights of 60 to 120 gsm.
There can also be a Tray 4 as for Tray 3 but only one 1500 sheet tray
can be used - so there would be Tray 1: multifunction, Tray 2: built in
500 sheet, Tray 3: 500 sheet and Tray 4: 1500 sheet giving a total
capacity of 2600 sheets.

Down:
Paper output is normally to a 250 sheet face down tray on top of the
printer.
A 500 sheet stacker unit or a 500 sheet stacker with a stapler can be
added on top of the printer taking the output capacity to 750 + 50
sheets so it can run largely unattended.

Up:
There is a 50 sheet face-up tray at the rear for thicker media.
Duplex:
Duplex and envelope feeder units are also optional.
Maximum Capacity:
Total input capacity 100 + 500 + 500 + 1500 =2,600 sheets
output capacity to 750 + 50.

The 4200 has a 300MHz RISC processor
Memory:
The LJ4200 has 48MB base expandable to 416MB. There are 4 x 100 pin
DIMM slots 1 preloaded with a device matching the initial specification
- 48MB on the basic 4200 and 64MB on other models. Slots 2,3 and 4 are
empty as shipped. The printer uses Memory Enhancement technology (HP
MEt) to reduce memory use.

Economode saves 50% of the toner at 600 dpi at some sacrifice in
appearance.
One of the selling points for the 4300 is the 18,000 page capacity from
it's high capacity cartridge Q1339A. A few compatible cartridge makers
offer a print cartridge that will fit the LJ4200 and LJ4300.

The LJ4200 has a long fuser and roller life and both are likely to
be
exhausted around the same time - ie the rollers will show wear and
cracking at about the same time the fuser foil is doing so. The
maintenance kit is therefore a popular repair option.

kits are not always available and can raise more issues than a new
replacement so they are recommended for experienced engineers cahnging
parts on a familiar printer. Don't buy a refurbished unit if you have
one printer that simply must be repaired immediately.
