HP Laserjet 8100
Fast large-format printer designed for large departments and corporate print use. A3 and tabloid sized print. Low cost per page achieved using 20,000 page cartridges. In 2010 these machines are still quite widely used in production printing for short runs of catalogues and books.

The basic 8100 model comes with 2 x 500 sheet trays and 16MB RAM. There are 3 DIMM slots for upgrading.
The LaserJet 8100 was introduced in May 1998. It is a successor to the LJ 5Si and LJ 8000, looks similar but is faster aand has a ventilation grill just above the trays. Improvements to the processor and paper path parts give faster output.
The 8100 is based on the Canon WX engine which was also used as the HP 5Si, HP 8000, Canon LBP-WX, LBP2460, Lexmark Optra N Model 240 and 245 and QMS 2425.
The LJ8100 was replaced by the LJ 8150. The 8150 was introduced in 2001 and was the end of the road for the WX engine as an active HP product. However many of these machines remain in use.

32 pages per minute A4, 18 pages per minute A3, and 8.4 pages per minute A3 duplex. Best quality print can be produced at full speed. An enhanced speed for the WX engine.
Printing at 600 dots-per-inch (dpi) with Resolution Enhancement technology (REt). FastRes 1200 provides 1200 dpi quality at full speed. More than 220 levels of gray for photographic quality print.

The 8100 uses a C4182X toner cartridge with a capacity of 20,000 pages. This cartridge contains toner, developer, drum and charge roller in one easily replaceable item.

A laser printer fuser bonds toner powder to the page using a combination of heat and pressure. The fuser used by the 8100 is essentially a pair of heated rollers. The fuser life is limited by the possibility of the heater failing and the probability that the non-stick surface will fail after some number of pages.

A maintenance kit provides a fuser and a set of the rollers that wear out due to use. Rollers are often changed at the same time as fusers because wear rates are similar.

These printers still have HP parts available. There are also secondary sources so although other WX printers have becom obsolescent, as at Janury 2010 these printers are still maintainable.
