Reliable Remanufactured Cartridges

One of the merits of the P4014 against a new printer is the low cost of good re-manufactured cartridges.

HP CB519A Duplexer for HP P4014 series Printers.

top-right-photoCB519A / CF062A duplexer

HP Part CB519A is the automatic duplexer for printing two-sided documents without manual intervention to flip over the pages. The auto-duplexer turns pages around so both sides print automatically and handles high volumes without troubling users.

The duplexer works with many standard paper sizes including A4 and US-letter of course. It can't work with the smaller sizes allowed by the custom media cassette CB527A because very short or narrow material won't match the duplexer rollers.

  • Media types supported: Paper (bond, color, letterhead, plain, preprinted, prepunched, recycled, rough, light), user-defined.
  • Media sizes supported: A4, Letter, legal, executive, custom 5.8 x 8.3 to 8.5 x 14.0 in

The CB519A automatic duplexer works with any of the P4014, P4015 and P4515 printers. A new duplexer the CF062A was introduced in 2013 - it is primarily for the LJ-M601 series, but backward compatible with the P4014 series.

Duplexers are moderately expensive. This one costs about £200 new and £120 refurbished (see below). Some entire printers cost less than this duplexer. The payback time of saving paper is surprisingly rapid. These are fast printers with big cartridges intended to work hard each day, Depending on precisely what you pay for paper the duplexer will haved saved money after two or three large cartridges. There are printers with duplexing built in that cost about the same as this unit - but of course they don't have the same flexibility, easy maintenance and low cost per page. One advantage of duplex print is that it cuts the fianancial cost a bit and the environmental effect is nearly halved because less paper is used. Yet a further advantage is that documents seem more professional - single sided print is a sign of amateur production.

The CB519A / CF062A duplexers are a significant piece of machinery - a bump at the back houses the motors and control electronics whilst a long "tongue" sticks into the printer to transport paper - it passes just above the cassette position. Once the duplexer is installed the printer takes a bit more space. Rear access to the printer becomes more important as it may be necessary to remove the duplexer to remove paper jams. (Paper jams usually suggest a paper feed repair kit).

The CB519A is rarely available new and has been replaced by CF062A designed for the M601 series but backwards compatible to the older P4014 machines. If you buy a new duplexer for a P4014 the CF062A is recommended.

The duplexer simply hooks onto the back of the printer with the "tongue" sticking into the machine. Verify that the printer has detected the duplexer by printing a configuration page (INFORMATION > PRINT CONFIGURATION). Set the computer driver to recognise the new accessory as well. Once in place the duplexer need not interfere with operation - single sided documents are just specified as such in the document or the driver and they don't (usually) go through the duplexer. (Actually we observe that our Linux driver does odd things but its probably the PPD file or problems printing Web pages ).

If a duplex document is specified the first side prints normally and almost exits to the top tray. At this point the duplexer reverse gears act and something called the duplex pendulum within the printer takes over control of the printer's exit rollers. The page reverses back into the printer but this time goes down the back and into the duplexer. The duplex tongue carries the page back towards the paper input - but this time the other way up. The sheet passes through a second time. Auto-duplexing saves money and time compared with attempting to do duplex printing manually.

Faults

Most of the reported faults with a duplexer arise from user misunderstandings:

  • Attempting to print a non-supported page type. The auto-duplexer cannot handle all the paper sizes available to the printer; there are not enough rollers to handle small sheets from custom trays and the angle paper has to turn through is too sharp for card.
  • The driver or printing application is not set for duplex. If possible, the printer will do what it is told by the user's computer.

If the computer driver is specifying duplex print but that doesn't happen print a configuration page and check tha the unit is listed. If it is not then try powering-off, removing and re-intalling it.

component diagram

The auto-duplexer obviously adds something to the complexity of the printer. There are two motors in the back of the duplexer unit:

  • one for taking over the exit rollers via the pendulum and pulling the page back in
  • another driving paper down and through the tongue and up into the registration station

If there is a problem with paper feed on a printer it is helpful to try it without the duplexer and see if the fault completely disappears. High speed printers give particular difficulties because there are likely to be several pieces of paper in the machine when a problem occurs. If the printer does get a paper jam the specific Error 13 message shows the sensor that triggered the problem.

The duplex mechanism used here dates back at least to the LaserJet 4200 and that used in the LaserJet 4000 was similar. This is a long-running design and has proved reliable. Older duplexers won't fit recent printers but it is only details that have changed.

Warranty:   Warranty on this part was said to be 1 year in icecat.co.uk. Other sources said 90 days return to base, for replacement or repair. In practice CB519A units will almost always be refurbs and likely to have 90 day warranty.

One slight oddness with these duplexers has always been that they get in the way of the IEC power inlet on the back of the printer. HP overcome that by providing a right- angled power cable for the printer. People sometimes lose the angled cable. The duplexer won't seat correctly and will give a lot more trouble if the wrong cable is used.

Associated parts :

  • Duplexers benefit from a C13 power inlet cable with ninety degree right-angle to right. A standard straight cable interferes with the body of the duplexer. HP duplexers shipped as "white box" ship with instructions and the cable. Others may not.
  • Printers with a duplex unit are frequently part of a bundle that also includes a CB518A Feeder Tray.

HP Information

A wildcard query to HP Partsurfer on CB519: gave:

CB519-67901 Duplexer unit - Allows automatic printing on both sides of the paper
CB519A HP LaserJet Duplexer

Query CB519A gave:

CB519A HP LaserJet Duplexer

... with a buy button but Where Used Information for this Part Number is not available at present. The buy button took me to a nice picture and a price of $295 but then a script blanked the Firefox screen and died.

Query CB519-67901 gave:

CB519-67901 Duplexer assembly - Automatic two sided printing accessory
Part CB519-67901 is no longer supplied. Please order the replacement, CF062-67901

Icecat said this duplexer has both a short public code CB519A and four GTINs (EAN/UPC)8835852799060, 5704327676775, 0883585279975, 0883585279906. There had been 50234 product views suggesting considerable interest. In 2015 the code gave one EAN/UPC 0610563568352 and product views had risen to 79446.

It is a slight mystery as to why CB519A / CB519-67901 gives rise to several GTINs. Probably different packaging or instruction leaflets.

Incidentally the query CF062A gave:

A single GTIN: 0886111320073 and there had been 19049 product views

HPs intended public code used on brochures is CB519A with the longer and less memorable CB519-67901 as an engineering (or brown-box) part; in practice both codes get used.

Prices noted are for a new item, one off, without tax. The list is as encountered. We haven't bothered with currency conversion - half of our readers are outside the UK and are more interested in dollar prices. The Australian prices tend to include tax - there is quite a variation in prices, our pricing is quite competitive compared with some.

Only one of the websites for this item supplied any technical information. None of the other websites seen gave any further information on the product - but perhaps that is obvious in this case. Site velonicalaina.blogspot.co.uk blogs looked as though it might have further content. All the rest were merely vendors giving no more infomation than found in the HP brochure.

Supply Situation

Accessories like duplexers are usually better value as part of one of HP's "bundles". For instance the difference between the M601n and M601dn is about £150. whilst the duplexer itself retailed for beetween £170 and over £200. CB519A was replaced by CF062A in 2011.

The older accessory CB519A was still listed available as new in August 3013, but only by one distributor and they didn't actually have stock. In 2015 it is listed as refurbished by one distributor with 3 in stock. Printers are usually sold with the duplexer accessories which add to the sales potential of second-hand printers. Duplexers themselves don't seem to sell second-hand in great numbers, but then holding them in a warehouse isn't too difficult either.

We can provide this part as refurbished when required. However the price is between £100 and £ 130. When this page was first compiled (August 2013) new items were available but that was residual stock still in the channel. Part coed CB519A is now only available as a "refurb" and not in significant numbers. CF062A is obtinable new in 2015.
