HP Original Cartridges

Reliable Remanufactured Cartridges

One of the merits of the P4014 against a new printer is the low cost of good re-manufactured cartridges.

Error Message 54 for HP P4014. P4015 and P4515 Series Printers.

54.XX errors on P4014, P4015 and P4515 printers mean a sensor problem - one of the photointerruptors that track paper through the printer is suggesting paper is present when it should not be. There is more on how the sensors work here.

54.XX ERROR

About 54 Error HP say in the P4014 service manual:

This message is typically related to a sensor issue. To continue turn off then on. Follow the instructions displayed on the product control panel.

The "54 Error" has been used a bit inconsistently.   On some printers the message "54.1 REMOVE SEALING TAPE" warns that the toner cartridge tape is still in place. and on others "54.4 PRINTER ERROR" says there is a problem with line voltage -rather than giving the notorious 50.2 error which suggests the fuser has failed. Colour printers seem to use the code for toner sensors. However those error don't apply to the P4014 series.

Error 54 in the P4014 series seems to mean a sensor has been found misbehaving. The sensor locations are shown briefly here.

HP_LJ_P4014

At a guess the "XX" subcode is the position of the sensor that is mis-indicating. In the circuits they have three digit numbers to indicate which is which (PS101, PS102 etc) and in the diagnostics they are letters (N, B etc) which is a little bit confusing. Presumably these also map to the XX subcode.

Remedies

Examine and clean the sensor locations. Note any sensors that don't look straight and could be mis-seated. If the fault is persistent use diagnostic mode to identify the specific problem.

Next, a question. Did you just try to pull misfed paper out of the throat of the printer just above the cassette tray? (tray 2). If so, your paper feed and separation rollers are worn and now you may now have dislodged the paper detection flag PS102 (Pre-Feed Sense).

Web Research

Google suggests 120,000 results for 54 ERROR on its own, mostly stuff to do with Windows and Itunes. I tried querying Google with P4015 "54 ERROR" in quotes and got a suggestion of About 52 results; most of them pages already reviewed .

  • charter.net hoary old chart of codes relevant to the LaserJet II and III.
  • fixya suggested 9,697 people had viewed the product, 87 people had asked about it and 22 people had found solutions. However the stuff displayed was all for an irrelevant old message on the LaserJet II and III series. Presumably what happens is that people who are keen on Fixya try to answer from Google queries, but Google is returning irrelevance on this subject for want of choice.
  • electronicwerkstatt.de old chart - nothing more recent than the 4M.
  • HP support document for the Color LaserJet 2600n - rather irrelevant because the "54" messages there are largely for toner level sensors.
  • h20000.www2.hp.com. Another link to a PDF of the HP "Printer Job Language Technical Reference Manual"
  • HP support Color LaserJet 9500 messages - also irrelevant to this task.
  • thelaserguys just says "54 Error duplexor" (but that isn't usually true). However they do seem to have updated their list a bit recently.
  • titaniumprint somewhat out of date pdf getting as far as the LJ-4300 and LJ-4600.
  • irrelevant list of medical stuff
  • fixyourownprinter page HP Laserjet 2840, various problems. Illustrates the muddle over "54" errors. HP couldn't help because they had never heard of 54.11 for a CLJ-2840.
  • tryus.org 1998 Edition of the "HP LaserJet Family Quick Reference Service Guide"; it does mention error 54.
  • helpowl extracts from the 8550dn Service Manual. Not relevant.
  • helpowl with more extracts from the 8550dn Service Manual. Not relevant

Search on "54 Error" gave less than a page of barely relevant stuff before the repeat the search with the omitted results included message. There is evidence that this error message is bugging a few people but very little relevant has been written about it. It seems to be a "catch all" for "a sensor is misbehaving" and with the P4014 series that would suggest working through the diagnostics.
