HP RL1-1654 Multipurpose Tray 1 Roller for HP Laserjet P4014, P4015, P4515, M4555 and M4559 series Printers.

The RL1-1654 part was the MP Tray 1 Separation Roller for use in the HP Laserjet P4014, P4015, P4515, M4555 and M4559 series printers.This roller is used with two other rollers as part of a kit CB506-67905, to solve paper misfeeds and jams within the paper feed mechanism. Depending on how heavily the printer is used determines how long it will be before the rollers are changed. The roller is used in conjunction with the RL1-1641 MP Tray 1 Pickup Roller and the RL1-1663 MP Tray 1 Feed Roller as part of a paper feed repair kit.

The RL1-1654 has a black textured coating and a plastic mushroom shaped plastic part which allows for easy insertion into the mechanism

The rollers are usually changed together is it is often difficult to tell which of the rollers is causing the fault

Warranty: 90 day warranty. Rollers are not considered repairable - they wear out because the texture of the rubber wears away with use

There is no way to repair a worn roller. However rollers sometimes get contaminated with a scale build-up and a wash with slightly soapy water might just get further life out of them. In the end new rollers will be needed; the rollers and the kit are in the catalog here.

The separation roller is at fault if there is a history of several sheets moving into the printer at the same time. If this happens they will probably get jammed at registration, under the drum or in the fuser and there will be two or more overlapping.

An associated part is RL1-1641 which provides paper pickup - the initial impetus for paper to move. Paper then arrives at the RL1-1663 and RL1-1654 pair which are the feed and separation rollers.

The idea is that the RL1-1663 feed roller on the top pushes paper towards the registration station. If one sheet of paper moves then it easily overcomes this RL1-1654 contra-rotating retard roller underneath which is driven through a torque limiter. In the event that two sheets move however, this retard roller drives any page underneath back into the tray. If it fails to do that, bad separation will cause paper jams.

HP Partsurfer says about RL1-1654:

RL1-1654-000CN Multi-purpose/tray 1 separation roller Part RL1-1654-000CN is no longer supplied. Please order the replacement, CB506-67905

In September 2013 there did not seem to be an entry in Icecat for roller RL1-1654 individually. Presumably that reflects its replacement by the CB506-67905 kit.

Prices noted are for a new item, one off, without tax. The list is as encountered. We haven't bothered with currency conversion - half of our readers are outside the UK and are more interested in dollar prices.

Some of these suppliers seem to be selling this roller on its own rather than as part of a kit. There are a few pages listed with check price and availability, one or two pages with contact supplier - one possibly helpful blog on this part. There are a couple of irrelevant pages . All the rest in the list were merely vendors giving no more information than found in the HP brochure.

Supply Situation

This roller seems to have HP as sole global supplier. We are not currently aware of any secondary source of supply.

One or two vendors may be selling this part a refurbished, ie as "good pulls" from decommissioned printers. We would not recommend such parts as rollers inherently wear out and solving paper feed issues can be quite laborious.

The part is listed by three distributors, one holds stock. We think demand for the kit will be quite high, but perhaps not for this part individually although it and the RL1-1663 will be susceptible to wear..

We can provide these parts when required. The price is about £11. You may prefer the kit which is priced between £15 and £22. However if you are quite clear that this roller is worn then they do still seem to be available in September 2013.
