HP RM1-0036 Pickup roller.

top-right-photo

RM1-0036 is the pickup roller for quite a number of HP laser printers, namely the LaserJets 4200 4300 4240, 4250, 4350 and M4345P4010 series - P4014, P4015, P4515The Enterprise 600 printers M601 M602 M603and the Colour LaserJet 4700 / 4730MFPand CP4005. It is just about the nearest HP has come to a universal pickup roller.

The roller is grey hard(ish) rubber on a foam rubber backing with a white bobbin and a moulded in 24 tooth gear.

The idea is that the texture in the roller surface is sufficient to grip the flock of the paper and push it. All this roller has to do is push the paper about 25mm (an inch) forward in the tray to the point where the RM1-0037 feed and separation rollers take over. The RM1-0036 is driven via an idle cog from the same paper feed shaft that drives RM1-0037.

The only likely fault with these rollers is that the surface texture wears away, leaving the roller unable to exercise adequate grip on the paper. This kind of fault tends to appear when a tray is rather full or nearly empty (at the margins of its working parameters).

Faults and Replacements

Replacing this roller and the RM1-0037 pair it tends to accompany is really easy, although they are in a slightly uncomfortable position under the main body of the printer. Take the cassette tray out and they are visible at the front of the printer, midway across, on the paper feed shafts ( RM1-4562) In the P4014 etc. Both rollers are held by little clips. There is no repair for the roller, however cleaning it may help if it is covered with dust or flaky deposit picked up from the paper. If you need a cleaning fluid use ordinary water or soapy water followed by a rinse. Platen cleaner should work, although on soft rubber it isn't a long term fix. Isopropyl might de-nature soft rubber rollers. Print manufacturers suggest not handling the rubber of the rollers as grease from your hand may denature them - although we think you need a warm climate before this becomes a serious issue. The rubber tyres are not available separate from the white bobbin. There is more on paper feed for the P4014 and M601 series here.

RM1-0036

RM1-0036 needs replacing when the texture on its surface is not sufficient to reliably push paper any more. The point where this happens will vary with printer use and paper type but expected life is several tens of thousands of pages. Typically the printer will misfeed (Error 13) but when you check the paper path there is nothing to see, the paper seems not to have moved at all.

We would almost always suggest replacing all three rollers if RM1-0036 seems to be giving problems. The RM1-0037 pickup and separation pair are more prone to wear.

RM1-0036

From HP's number formation of "RM1-0036-000CN and labelling of packages we'd suggest RM1-0036 is originally a Canon part number (HP use Canon engines in laser printers, its a longstanding relationship). The information above suggests the rollers come in multiples of 600 on pallets of 36000. Looking at stock in distribution nobody had more than 3,000 of these in July 2013 so Partsurfer might be misleading. We tend to see them arrive in packs of ten, they used to be boxed but now just come in labelled polythene bags.

RM1-0036-000CN has EAN codes 0200000909413, 2000009094138 and 5704327504986
RM1-0036-020CN did not give an EAN .
Non of the other codes above triggered Icecat to provide an EAN

. We don't know whether the switch to RM1-0036-020CN represents a design change or just a supply chain change.

HP Partsurfer claims the RM1-0036 fits the LaserJet 4200, 4240, 4250, 4300, 4350, 4345, M4345, enterprise 600 M601, M602, M603 and unusually a couple of colour printers as well the 4730 and CM4730. It also does fit the 500 sheet feeder CB518A and 1500 sheet feeder C523A as well. In its usual attempt at levity Partsurfer also claims it will fit the LaserJet 4 (My colleague Simon says "not without a Dremel ") and something called the LaserJet P3004 which is fictitious.RM1-0036 10 pack

Supply Situation

As already suggested these seem to be made by Canon although HP stock may be cheaper. In electronics factory gate prices are not always cheapest.

There are "compatible" parts from at least one UK distributor. At present we would not recommend them (and don't sell them) as there is no specific need - HP material is available and affordable. Using compatible rollers raises quality control issues that we don't think are worthwhile to save a couple of pounds.

Figures and stock levels given here are guidelines, our prices change with distribution lists - see the catalog.. Stock numbers in distribution indicate plenty of supply in July 2013, at least 5 distributors some with thousands in stock .

We carry local stock of these parts so they are available with the lower postal charge rather than needing a courier charge.
