RM1-4526 delivery drive for HP P4014, P4015 & P4515 Printers.

HP Part RM1-4526 is said to be the paper delivery drive for the LaserJet P4014, P4015 and P4515 laser printers. HP say "Two gears mounted on a plate located on the paper delivery assembly". Actually it is a bit more than that. Certainly it is mounted next to the paper delivery assembly RM1-4529. It is driven from the fuser CB506-67902 by motor RM1-5051.

The LaserJet 4200 had the duplex pendulum RM1-0002 in the same position and this part seems very similar to that - identical apart from minor changes in the gear moulding. The Enterprise M601 hasRM1-8410 which seems similar but is presumably not identical.

As already said the RM1-4526 is described by HP as a couple of cogs on a metal plate transferring power to the exit rollers. It is actually four cogs with a shutter, and a couple of levers working a disengagement against pressure from a spring

This component is essential in duplex printing - it is the mechanism that reverses the delivery rollers to push paper back into the printer when it has nearly emerged. Paper comes out of the fuser and up the delivery assembly. At this point if a duplexer is fitted the paper reverses and goes back down, under the print mechanism and re-emerges near the registration station. This is the mechanism that permits the reversal.

The duplexer has two motors, one for the duplexer itself pushing paper through it's paper path and the other for the exit roller reversal. This second motor is on the right side of the printer (or left when you are looking at the back of the machine) and it drives a cog chain up to a swing-plate. When the duplexer is fitted this cog chain engages the duplexer pendulum assembly or paper delivery drive. Whilst there is no call on the duplexer the pendulum is swung so that the delivery cog chain engages the fuser motor. When there is a call on the duplexer this reverser motor starts, swings the pendulum and reverses the paper direction.

HP took a different approach with the CLJ-2600 and suchlike printers, the duplex reversal motor is built into the printer in the factory and so it isn't optional. The LaserJet 4200 and its relatives have the duplexer as an option so the reversing motor is part of the duplexer unit.

Because there is an extended gear chain reaching up the RM1-4526 may be prone to damage. The electrical connection between the duplexer and the duplexer is on one side, this mechanical connection from duplexer into the printer on the other. It is possible to mis-seat the duplexer but have the motors turn with the gears improperly meshed; they are plastic and could be damaged.

Gears aren't repairable so if this assembly fails there is no option but to replace it.

Jams in the output tray might indicate lack of power in the delivery rollers. We think the paper delivery unit and the photo-interrupter that senses paper exit would be more likely causes of a fault. However users have a tendency to pull at pages as they emerge from the top of the printer and this assembly would then be vulnerable.

See the list of associated parts above. A significant likelihood is damage to the duplexer itself CB519A if the cogs don't mesh properly.

HP Information

A wildcard Partsurfer query in July 2013 gave:

HWP-RM1-4526-000CN Paper delivery drive assy
RM1-4526-000CN Paper delivery drive assembly - Two gears mounted on a plate located on the paper delivery assembly

and a specific query on RM1-4526-000CN

RM1-4526-000CN Paper delivery drive assembly - Two gears mounted on a plate located on the paper delivery assembly

We know of no Canon equivalent to these printers so the part is HP specific. Unless the individual cogs are commonplace it is unlikely that the part would attract compatible makers.

This component is specific to the P4014, P4015 and P4515.

Web Research

We generally begin research on parts with Google which says RM1-4526 gives About 172,000 results (0.30 seconds). In 30 results we found nothing but offers for sale, no sign of what faults might be fixed.

A search for duplex pendulum assembly was less overtaxing, About 1,610 results but less relevant because it included parts like RM1-3748 which meets a similar need in the P3005 etc. One person on fixyourownprinter.com asking what the duplex pendulum does with no replies (and since he asked two years ago I didn't respond).

Tradebin suggests four suppliers, one each in the UK and France offering refurbs and two in the US not stating the source.

Icecat says RM1-4526-000CN = 5704327724001. The number of product views was just 51, again suggesting this part excited very little interest.

Web research suggests some well known suppliers are charging an extraordinary price for this part, for instance morecomputers at £30.43 but that does include free delivery. Lambdatek want £16.14. US sites seem to be charging $20 to $40. We charge around £10 but there is currently £8 for delivery.

A significant source of supply seems to be used parts on eBay. We can't see any significant disadvantage to buying used parts in this case except that the "refurbisher" will have cleaned the item and removed the grease. Grease is probably helpful in keeping noise down.

Supply Situation

The part is listed by three UK distributors and one has a small stock of new items. We think demand for the part will be quite low, but not zero.

We can provide these parts when required. The price will typically be about £10 which largely reflects the logistics of obtaining one.

Curiously there don't currently seem to be any "refurbed" parts. That suggests that the dismantlers have either sold those they have or don't bother to list it.

Price and availability for the part change with distribution lists - see the catalog. Stock numbers indicate there is a small call for the part.
