HP P4014 Series 500 Sheet Cassette RM1-4559.

HP RM1-4559 is the 500 sheet paper cassette for the LaserJet P4014. P4015 and P4515 printers.

Most people call this a tray however officially it is a cassette. Other phrases for the object are cassette drawer or just paper drawer. The word cassette is helpful because Multipurpose (MP) tray 1 that folds down on the front of the printer definitely can't be described that way. In principle the cassettes can be kept near the printer, pre-loaded with paper ready to be used although the design of this printer doesn't really suit that. It can be expanded with up to four paper feeder units (or accessory trays underneath the printer itself.

The tray is much like many others in this type of printer, with adjustable sides and backstop to fit a variety of paper sizes. With a capacity of 500 sheets this tray uses a motor-assisted lifting plate.

A new version of this file written with the M601 in mind is here.

Paper sizes set some switch-arms on the side of the tray which automatically tell the printer what paper is loaded. The switches that communicate paper size are a know trouble spot - users are innevitably a bit heavy handed about sliding the tray in - when loaded with a ream of paper it is quite heavy.

The tray also holds the separation roller at the front, on a shaft that includes the torque limiter. The roller used in an RM1-0037 matching the feed-roller in the printer body. Paper is jogged up the tray a bit by the pickup roller RM1-0036. The feed roller in the printer body pushes paper up and into the printer. However if two sheets of paper move the separation roller on its torque drive will rotate in the other direction - pushing double-feeds back to the tray. Paper feed is explained more fully here .

HP Partsurfer says:

HWP-RM1-4559-000CN Tray 2 cassette
RM1-4559-000CN 500-sheet paper cassette tray 2
RM1-4559-020CN 500-sheet paper cassette tray 2
RM1-4559-BULK CASSETTE
RM1-4559BULK Tray 2 Cassette

This part might also be known by the Canon number RM1-4559-000 and HP's full code is RM1-4559-000CN. At some point the design or supply chain was modified and the full part number is now RM1-4559-020CN.

So far as we know the RM1-4559 cassette is not compatible with those in the printer's accessory trays or feeder units. They do look the same and use the same rollers. One or two sources say they are compatible, but not those we trust. We haven't yet tried it.

Extra cassette trays are bought for several reasons. Some people buy them just to have a spare pre-loaded with a different size of paper - but that only seems common in the US. In the UK people buy them because they get broken. Cassette parts do quite commonly get broken; paper is heavier than people expect and re-loading a printer in the middle of another task irritates people. Unfortunately the paper guide bits don't seem to be readily available.

Faults

The main faults that might be blamed on the tray are likely to be misfeeds or double feeds. Double feeds suggest a problem with the RM1-0037 retard roller or it's RC2-5771 torque limiter under the flap at the front of the tray. Both are very easily replaced although we'd only recommend a torque limiter if it genuinely seems wrong, they don't fail often.

As already mentioned the pickup and feed rollers that work with cassette tray 2 are in the printer body, they are easily seen in the drawer space once the cassette is fully removed. They click into place on latches like the roller in the tray.

Paper is lifted up to the rollers by a lift motor; a fully loaded tray is too heavy for the spring used on lower capacity machines. The lift motor is about half way down the cassette tray hole on the right. It can be heard whiring when the tray is pushed in. It is RM1-4585.

A nice feature of these trays is that the rear guide has holes punched in it that work switches to automatically inform the printer what paper is loaded. This is a good idea because users mis-informing their computer about what paper is loaded where can cause problems with printers. The disadvantage is that the size detect assembly RM1-4525 sometimes gives issues.

Supply Situation

In July 2013 these trays are available both new and in "refurbished" condition. New are about £61 and refurbs about £10 less - there is sufficient demand that distributors are asking a rather high price. These are just guidelines to give an idea, our prices change with distribution lists - see the catalog . .

Stock numbers for new trays vary with time but are often over 100 indicating there is a considerable call for the part. IT departments with fleets of these printers keep one or two trays is stock so that accidents don't bring a printer to a halt.

We will usually be able to ship trays for next-day delivery.
