C540 -C544 Context

The C540n is the "baby" of a family all using the same engine but with the higher models offering more premium features.

The higher models can also take larger cartridges which will give lower per-page prices if there is a sufficiently high print demand. The C540n is cheap to buy but doesn't offer this longer term cost saving option.

All the printers can take a Duo Drawer with a 550-Sheet capacity 100 sheet feeder

The C540 family replaced the C530 series which was based on a different engine design.

Duty Cycle:

35,000 pages per month. Lexmark suggests a recommended monthly volume of 500 to 1,500 pages. The C544n has a suggested use of 800 to 3,000 pages and might be more appropriate for people intending to print in these volumes (upwards or 30-40 pages per day)

Lexmark say: " Maximum Monthly Duty Cycle is defined as the maximum number of pages a device could deliver in a month. This metric provides a comparison of robustness in relation to other Lexmark printers and MFPs. "

Print Resolution:

True 1200x1200 colour printing.

Black 1200 x 1200 dpi, 4800 Color Quality (1200 x 600 dpi). Color 1200 x 1200 dpi 4800 Color Quality (1200 x 600 dpi).

"4800 Color Quality" is Lexmark's way of implying that a combination of the native resolution of 1200x1200 dpi with greyscale or dot size gives a colour range equivalent to the higher resolution. Photos should look quite good from this machine.

Acoustic Noise:

Lexmark claim its very quiet - 47dBA while printing and capable of a Quiet Mode.

Consumables:

These printers take a set of 4 toners, a set of 4 photoconductors, a transfer belt and a waste bottle. Lexmark also have "return program" cartridges to be returned to them for recycling.

The C540 can take two capacities of toner:
1000 page basic or 2,500 page high yield Black catridges.
1000 page basic of 2000 page high yield Colour cartridges.

The C544N model is more expensive than the C540 but can also take an extra-high yield cartridge where the black toner has a life of 6,000 pages and the colours of 4,000 pages.

In 2009 Lexmark were offering "Lexmark Rewards" on these printers. Users who sign up get a free cartridge fro every 10 they return and a free imaging kit as well. The sign up site is at LexmarkRewards.com.

The level of consumable supply levels can be seen in the "Device Status" page on the printers internal web server.

Toner:

These printers take four colour toner cartridges with separate photoconductors and a waste bottle. Toner cartridges are very easy to replace. Replace the relevant cartridge when a prompt message appears on the LCD screen and press the go button (tick) to continue.

The page yield figures given below assume 5% average page cover with 3-4 pages per print task.

Return Program cartridges are sold at a discount to the regular model and can be returned free of charge to Lexmark for recycling. The aim is to save cusomers money and achieve reliable recycling.

Extra High Yield cartridges C544X1KG, C544X1CG and so forth are not available for the C540 and C543 printers - only with the C544 and X544.

Messages "940.01", "941.01" etc imply errors with the installation of toner cartridges or faults within the cartridge.

Waste Bottle:

Laser printer photoconductors don't succeed in transfering all the toner onto the page, there is usually some left behind. This is removed in the eraser and deposited in a waste toner bottle. The printer LCD screen gives a "waste Toner Box" warning when the waste receptacle is full . Press the go button (tick) to continue printing.

Imaging Drum Kit:

The LCD screen will give the message "Imaging Kit" when a new kit is needed. Replace the kit and press the go button (tick) to continue) Yield for the imaging drums and developers is about 30,000 pages.

C540X71G Black Imaging Kit. Used in the C540 / X540 series printers. This kit is for exchanging the black photoconductor and developer.

C540X74G Black and Color Imaging Kit. Used in the C540 / X540 series printers. This kit is for exchanging both black and colour photoconductor and developer.

Instructions for changing the developer units are given on page 130 on of the user manual. In summary - remove all the toners, remove the waste bottle and pull the imaging kit out. Take care not to touch the underside of the imaging kit.
