The transfer belt is a page-wide and page-with expanse of electrostatic material that carries media under the succession of black, yellow, magenta and cyan print units. Under each unit it matches the drum with a transfer roller.
The belt makes one cycle for each page printed, but another at the start of a print job and several every time the printer calibrates. The belt isn’t used up but does wear out and then print quality will deteriorate. A short statement of life is “60,000 pages” but that assumes a mix of jobs averaging about 3 pages. It’s actual life will depend on printer use patterns and will be shorter if all pages are single jobs.
During calibration the printer puts patterns directly on the belt, then reads them with the colour registration sensor in the rear of the printer. A failure to calibrate could be a dirty belt or sensor. Because the belt does accept print directly but has to be fairly clean when media pass through it has a cleaning mechanism and waste toner box on it’s underside. The waste box is intended to last the life of the belt and is not purchasable as a separate spare.
Oki have made the belt user changeable. All the toner-developer units have to be lifted out – we would suggest putting them on a clean sheet of newspaper and then covering them with a few more to give some protection from light. The belt is held in place by two latches at the sides, it then lifts out by the big blue handle.
