Printer Faults - Paper Out Light

The paper-out light generally has an obvious meaning - the printer isn't detecting any paper in the tray you selected.

You probably knew that before getting to this web page; so the problem is possibly something a bit more subtle - the printer may have two trays and where normally you would normally use tray 2 as the default, on this occasion, for reasons best known to a software writer the printer (or more likely the computer) has decided to use tray 1. If this is the case either use the printer paper in tray 1 or cancel the job and make sure you direct it to tray 2 next time.

Lights that don't seem sensible can also be a warning that something problematic has happened. For instance, if the "attention" light is also on the pair of lights together, this may mean something like "change drum".

Low-cost printers often have a couple of buttons and some LEDs instead of a control panel. Given a limited range of LEDs the printer has to signal problems by obscure codes. Very often there is also a message somewhere in the PC driver as well.

Obscure light messages have to be looked up in the user guide. If you don't have the user manual (in a heap of discarded CDs) search engines are often helpful. A phrase such as

  • "aculaser C900" "reference guide" filetype:pdf
  • "Laserjet CM4540" "user guide" filetype:pdf

Some manufacturers are more benevolent than others in making user manuals easy to find online.
