Brother DCP 8040

The Brother 8000 series printers are mono laser-printer based with a colour scanner so they can function as digital copiers (DCP models) or Copiers and faxes (MFC models).

The DCP-8040 and DCP-8045D were both launched in 2004; the 8045D has duplex print ability and a multi-purpose tray.

The MFC8890DW is the same as the MFC-8480DN but with WiFi and a front USB direct port as well as duplex.

Duplex scanning is widely reported to be slow, but that is true of other low cost printers if they have duplex scanning at all.

These printers are low cost for the functionality offered. That is reflected to some extent in the build quality and that gives rise to a divide in opinion reflected on Amazon.Com Customer Reviews:

David S on Amazon says The build quality is very cheap and flimsy. Cheap plastic, poorly fitted parts. This translated into issues the first time I used it. The duplex scanner, which is something I'll use regularly, pulled multiple pages at once nearly every time I ran a job. The second job, a page got jammed in the feeder. I didn't get through a single job successfully.

But T Boyer "seattleparent" says We have the 8080DN and this series of Brother printers is FANTASTIC -- an amazingly powerful business printer for the price of a personal printer. These things are well built, meant for a busy workgroup/small business setting. My wife runs a small nonprofit and has to print board packets and this thing just cranks them out. It will happily print two-sided packets and collate them -- it will go hours of printing without a hiccup. Duplex printing is much slower than one sided printing -- DUH, that is true of ANY printer. You're not going to get high duplex speed until you get into the corporate printers.

Our recommendation would be to make sure the printer is on a firm, strong surface that does not deflect or bend under the weight (use a ruler on edge to check). Don't put the printer on a flimsy chipboard desk or cupboard. Many printers will be a bit quirky if they aren't on a strong surface.

Be careful when lifting and lowering the scanner lid.

Like most printers this one has a few weak spots.

A particular problem seems to be the left hinge which seems to break quite frequently. The printer will then show "Doc Cover Open". Sometimes the problem is self evidently the hinge because the whole thing falls to bits, two springs pop out and the thing exudes oil.

The whole ADF assembly lifts off the top of the printer when a couple of screws are removed. The hinge assembly screws onto the underside of the ADF assembly and basically provides both the hinge and some spring power to make lifting the ADF easier - it would be heavy otherwise.

The hinge is spring-loaded to make lifting the ADF assembly lighter. The spring does not flex easily with hand pressure so people wonder whether the lid will be stuck open when they install a new spring.

The hinge is plastic and the screws engage in plastic so make sure to engage the threads correctly and to tighten them enough, do not over-tighten or the threads will be damaged.
