Brother HL-1230 and HL-1400 Series

The HL-1230, HL-1440, HL-1450 and HL-1470N are A4 laser printers using the same engine. This HL-1400 series was introduced in 2001 as a successor the the HL-1200 series which had been introduced in 1999. It's a successful design.

The HL-1230 looks very similar to the HL-1030 and HL-1240, they are related but the 1230 belongs to the HL-1400 Series just as the HL-1030 belongs to the HL-1200 series.

The explanation for the nutty product names is that the "12" is speed and the other two digits represent the feature set.

Cartridge, and drum are the same as in the HL-1200 series as well. (HL-1030, HL-1240, HL-1250 and HL-1270)

Control:

4 LEDs and a single key (as with predecessor machines)

Duty Cycle:

Brother don't give figures.

Up to 12 pages per minute for the HL-1230 and 15ppm for HL-1440 , HL-1450 HL-1470.

As usual the print speed will be partly determined by the computer system sending the print job.; this will be particularly noticeable with the HL-1230 which uses the host computer to format the page.

The HL-1230 itself just has 600 dpi resolution, other members of the family have 1200 x 600 dpi for graphics and the option to print at 600 dpi x 600 dpi or 300 dpi x 300 dpi.

These printers have fairly small base memories so it will often save time to print at the lowest resolution needed for a job. Ordinary text can be 300dpi, fine text may need 600dpi and photographs will benefit from 1200x600 dpi.

Paper Handling:

A4 / US-letter sized paper path feeding from a cassette underneath the machine or a front loading slot. Paper exits to an output bin on top or to a single sheet face-up tray.

Tray 1:Standard paper cassette with a capacity of 250 sheets of 80gsm paper.

Tray 2:Optional Cassette underneath the printer with a capacity of 250 sheets of 80gsm paper. Available only with the HL-1450 and HL-1470N.

Face Down:

150 sheet capacity tray built into the printer top

Face Up:

1 Sheet

Duplex:

Manual only

Processor:

All models use a Fujitsu MB86832 at 66MHz

Memory:

The HL-1440 and HL-1470N have more memory to support their print languages. The HL-1470N might still be regarded as short of memory since it also has to support a network stack.

HL-1230 and HL-1440 2MB

HL-1450 and HL-1470N 8MB

Interface:

IEEE 1284 Parallel on the base HL-1230 model

The HL-1440 and HL-1450 have both an IEEE 1284 Parallel port and USB

The HL-1470N has a network port.

Network:

The HL-1470N has an Ethernet 10/100 BaseTX network port supporting TCP/IP, AppleTalk, IPX/SPX and DLC/LLC. The other printers can be equipped with an NC-2010P 10Base T external server or an IR-1000 IrDA adapter.

Network Protocols:

TCP/IP, AppleTalk, IPX/SPX and DLC/LLC. Other protocols such as NetBEUI and Banyan VINES can be supported using an external print server.

Web based management or BRAdmin Professional.

HL-1230 is a Windows GDI Printer.

The HL-1440 has PCL4 emulation with 24 Bitmap fonts.

The HL-1450 has both PCL6. PostScript Level 2 emulation FX-850 and IBM Proprinter XL emulation with 66 fonts.

System Compatability:

Windows and Apple

The CUPS print subsystem in Linux has drivers for the HL-1230 HL-1440, 1450 with BR-Script2 and HL-1470N.

Power:

US 110 Volt and Rest of the World 220 Volt Models.

Power Consumption:

These printers use a hot-roller fuser heated by a halogen lamp so power consumption varies greatly as the thermostatic control turns the lamp on and off

Printing: Less than 340 W

Standby: Less than 70 W

Sleep: Less than 5 W

Enviroment:

These printers have an economy printing mode which saves 25% or 50% of the standard toner use by making printer somewhat lighter.

Sleep mode reduces the power consumption to less than 5 Watts.

Dimensions:

14.2" (W) x 16.9" (D) x 9.3"(H)(360 x 430 x 235 mm)

Weight:

Approx. 9.2 kg (20.3 lbs.) including the drum unit and toner cartridge The HL-170N is fractionally heavier.

Acoustic Noise:

50dB printing, Silent in standby

Consumables:

These printers use a separate toner cartridge and drum. The idea is to give economical printing and environmental benefits by using the OPC drum to it's full potential instead of disposing of it part used when a toner cartridge has been used up.

Brother's technique of redirecting unused waste toner back to the toner hopper by switching polarities on the waste capture roller and developer is also used.

The toner and drum have different part codes for different markets with the US code different and shorter to the European code. Since people look things up on the web both codes are in use.

TN-6300 aka TN-430 - Standard, Approx. 3000 pages A4/Letter size paper @ 5% coverage

TN-6600 aka TN-460 - High Yield, Approx. 6000 pages A4/Letter size paper @ 5% coverage

Drum and Developer

DR-6000 aka DR-400 - Approx. 20000 page life at 1 page/job.

These consumables are used in a wide variety of Brother machines.

Fuser:

The fuser in a laser printer adheres toner to the page using a combination of heat and pressure. The hot roller is coated in non-stick material to prevent the toner sticking and making marks down the page at intervals of 78.5 mm.

After many thousand pages the non stick material becomes exhausted, often parts of the material come away from the metal of the heated roller.

Spares:

Spares for this printer are still available in March 2010. Brother have re-used the engine design in subsequent machines and there are probably sufficient users to make toner sales still profitable for Brother.
