Brother HL-1450

The HL-1450 is an A4 laser printer capable of 15 pages per minute throughput and / or resolution up to 1200 x 600 dots per inch.

This printer is in the same immediate family as the HL-1230, HL-1440 and HL-1470 and shares consumables, fuser and spares with them. See the HL-1230 page for an overview of the family.

Like the HL-1440 it has:

  • A 250 sheet tray in the base
  • A single sheet bypass slot for letterhead and envelopes
  • USB or Parallel connection

Features the HL-1450 has that the HL-1440 lacks are

  • Extra memory - although still just 8MB Base RAM expandable to 36MB.
  • Print languages including PCL 6 and the BRscript 2 PostScript emulation.
  • The option for an extra tray.

The HL-1450 lacks the HL-1470N Ethernet port but it can be used with an external print server.

The HL-1450 is no longer made although it may be available from brokers and refurbisher. It's quite an old printer and limited by having just 8MB of base memory however that can be expanded to 36MB by using a 72 Pin SIMM (Many technicians have some lying around). Drums are expensive but do last a long time. Original toner is not cheap but readily available as a refill, as are refurbished drums. One reason to like these printers is the inclusion of bar-code printing.

In conclusion if all you want is a small office printer for text applications the HL-1450 will still do a good job.

Interface:

The HL-1450 has both an IEEE 1284 Parallel port and USB

Power:

US 110 Volt and Rest of the World 220 Volt Models

Power Consumption:

These printers use a hot-roller fuser heated by a halogen lamp so power consumption varies greatly as the thermostatic control turns the lamp on and off

Printing: Less than 340 W

Standby: Less than 70 W

Sleep: Less than 6 W

Dimensions:

360 x 370 x 235 mm 14.2" (W) x 14.6" (D) x 9.3"(H)

Weight:

Approx. 9.2 kg (20.3 lbs.) including the drum unit and toner cartridge

Consumables:

These printers use a separate toner cartridge and drum. The idea is to give economical printing and environmental benefits by using the OPC drum to it's full potential instead of disposing of it part used when a toner cartridge has been used up.

Brother's technique of redirecting unused waste toner back to the toner hopper by switching polarities on the waste capture roller and developer is also used.

TN-6300 aka TN-430 -Standard - Approx. 3000 pages A4/Letter size paper @ 5% coverage

TN-6600 aka TN-460 - High Yield - Approx. 6000 pages A4/Letter size paper @ 5% coverage

Drum and Developer

DR-6000 - Approx. 20000 pages (1 page/job)

Fuser:

The fuser in a laser printer adheres toner to the page using a combination of heat and pressure. The hot roller is coated in non-stick material to prevent the toner sticking and making marks down the page at intervals of 78.5 mm.

After many thousand pages the non stick material becomes exhausted, often parts of the material come away from the metal of the heated roller.

LJ7162001 Fuser / Fixing Unit, 230V. Fuser for HL-1230, 1440, 1450, 1470 (formerly LJ5830001)

The fusers fit the following:

HL-1230, HL-1430, HL-1435, HL-1440, HL-1450, HL-1470N, DCP-1400, intelliFAX 4100, intelliFAX 4750e, intelliFAX 5750e, Fax 8360P, Fax 8370, MFC-8500, MFC-9660 Series MFC-9700, MFC-9800.

Technicians usually just change the whole fuser these days. However fusers for these printers are fairly expensive and the heated roller may be available as an item. The Service Manual gives details on how to change the heated roller.

Maintenance Kit:

There doesn't seem to be a manufacturers maintenance kit. Buy a fuser (or hot roller) and the Pressure roller, Feed roller and Pad.

Warranty:

These printers are over 6 years old

Whats-In-The-Box:

Old printers only likely to be available as-is from brokers and refurbisher. Refurbisher are likely to ship a recycled cartridge with the printer

Spares:

Spares for this printer are still available in March 2010. Brother have re-used the engine design in subsequent machines and there are probably sufficient users to make toner sales still profitable for Brother.
