Brother HL-2700CN
The Brother HL-2700 and MFC-9420CN use a rather unusual print engine where four toner cartridges in a vertical stack work onto one OPC belt. This in turn transfers individual colours onto a transfer drum unit and from there to the page.
The mechanism is like that of the Lexmark C510 (5021-0xx engine) and the IBM Infoprint 1334. Some suppliers make toners that fit either the HL-2700 or C510. Tally also produced a similar machine but it may have used lower temperature toner.
A difference is that the processor in the Brother machine is slower than that in the Lexmark. The RAM options are similar - but the maximum memory allowed is higher.
The print speed around 30 pages per minute mono compares well with many of the most recent printers. The colour speed is less impressive but most businesses don't use colour all that much so the 8 page per minute output may be quite acceptable.
A problem for all these printers is the price of the OPC belt and the transfer drum.
The HL-2700 and MFC-9420 engine is not a Brother design. Despite the name they are unrelated to the 9440 which is a Brother product and reputedly rather better.

The user manual says "Call your dealer or Brother Customer Service for a replacement of the paper pick-up roller and separator pad ".

OPC Belt:
When the message "REPLACE OPC BELT" appears Brother recommend changing the OPC Unit. This is expensive (can be as expensive as a new printer. OPC belt cartridge 60,000 images (continuously printed)
OP-4CL OPC Belt - Up to 60,000 images.
Some users suggest reseting the belt warning and going on printing until image defects appear - typically ghosting and vertical streaks. Rest the counter by: Press GO and "+" at the same time Press "+" and step through until OPC BELT appears. Press "SET" The MFC-9420CN procedure is: Press 1 and 7 at the same time.
