Canon DR-2020U
Canon's DR-2020U is a document scanner intended for general office use. Functionally it is not very different to the scanners built onto top-end Multifunction printers (MFPs) with the obvious advantage being that the DR-2020U can be used where no printer is wanted - and where printers are wanted the use of a separate scanner gives a less bulky printer that might be easier to maintain.
The DR2020U feature set improves on what is provided with the average Multifunction printer in some respects. Scanner features and bundled software may be a bit better than ordinarily offered with printers.
An advantage with the DR-2020U is that the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) has duplex capability, it can read both sides of a document.
The DR-2020U is in Canon's 2013 line-up. It is a better-features replacement for machines like the DR-1210C which were rather slower at 12 pages per minute, had 600 dpi resolution and lacked the Duplex ADF.
The DR-2020U has features that will allow it to scan anything from a business card to a form or a 50 page double-sided report in one action, making it an excellent bridge between paperwork and computer.

Simple Maintenance
People sometimes avoid repairing perfectly good machines because they aren't clear how to do it. The most likely things to fail in a scanner are the feed and separation rollers, if the machine suffers from paper jams then:
- Check the paper specification in the user manual. Exceptionally thick or thin papers, crumpled or creased material probably won't feed correctly.
- Try cleaning the rollers and the separation pad by taking them out of the machine and wiping any contamination off with a wrung-out damp cloth. The UK is rahter fond of smooth paper that often contains a lot of kaolin which can build up as a white deposit on the rollers.
- If that doesn't work, change the pickup rollers and the separation pad. The rollers drive paper into the machine and need changing if paper frequently doesn't move far enough. The pad imposes a drag on any sheet below that on top and needs changing if the machine frequently has two or more sheets stuck in it.
The illustrations below are derived from the Canon User Guide and should help give an idea of how to clean or exchange rollers. Open the feeder cover and the rollers are held on a shaft across the body of the machine. A green handle at the rear needs to be pulled gently from the frame and rotated to release it.
The separation pad is under the feed rollers, held up on a spring. The pad is pivoted at the front end and held by clips at the back, squeeze the clips and it will spring up. Don't loose the spring, it is not readily available.
