DASCOM Printer List
Tally DASCOM specialise in business print, notably in dot-matrix and thermal printers. Both kinds of machines are widely used in factory and warehouse systems.
Dot matrix printers are the only surviving "impact" print technology - they can print multi-part forms. The moving pin printhead can be made robustly and can function in warehouse a factory environments that would disrupt the operation of inkjet and even laser printers. Furthermore dot matrix continues to offer the lowest cost way to get print on a page, which can be important where production line orders and despatch notes are concerned.
Thermal printers are widely used for transactions - most people are familiar with them from supermarket checkouts. Thermal printers can be very simple to operate with nothing but a reel of heat-sensitive material passing under a ceramic printhead. Thermal printers are also commonly used to produce warehouse labels.
DASCOM was founded in China in 1988 and now has headquarters in Hong Kong and offices world-wide. DASCOM has interests in telecoms and LED lighting as well as printing. DASCOM were originally making printers for Mannesman Tally.
The Tally brand were well known for making very robust printers like the MT290 and MT490. Originally they made punch tape machinery but they along with DEC and Centronics they developed dot-matrix techniques around 1970. Tally was bought by Mannmann AG in 1972 and operated under the name Mannesman Tally. A management buyout made Tally independent in 1996 but they merged with GENICOM in 2003. TallyGenicom seemed to get over-extended, producing laser and other printers using other manufacturers engines. Laser and inkjet printing are very hard-fought markets and competitors like HP and Canon have deep pockets. TallyGenicom collapsed in 2009, DASCOM bought the European and serial dot matrix operations whilst Printronix acquired TallyGenicom's US assets.
DASCOM might prefer to be known under their own name today. However the Tally brand is widely recognised and so is its reputation for robust machinery. DASCOM tend to use both names at present.
DASCOM do their best to respond to requests for Tally and TallyGenicom spares. However they bought the recent serial printer range and TallyGenicom's key management team. They can't always provide spares for Tally's very long back catalog.
