Epson Aculaser M1200

An A4 Black and White laser printer with a very small footprint and a low purchase cost. The Aculaser M1200 is aimed at the small office market where it sells against inkjet designs which would offer colour. This printer will usually prove faster at 20 page per minute and its running cost will usually be lower equivalent inkjet printers.

One advantage with the M1200 is large cartridges, a standard size of 1,800 pages and a high-capacity model at 3,200 pages. The machine uses two separate components - a toner/developer and a photoconductor drum.

The M1200 was launched in the UK on 1st November and is on the market in early 2010 at extraordinarily low prices around 60. It is aimed at home and small office users - and people who want a second printer.

The printer appears in very similar form as the EPL-6200L. Both printers are "light" versions of the EPL-6200 which has - a higher resolution at 1200 dpi: -

  • a tray for up to 250 sheet of paper
  • larger standard RAM of 8 or 16MB with expansion ability
  • a network port on the EPL-6200N

The engine is actually a Minolta design and appears as the PagePro 1100 and 1200, the Konica Minolta Fax 2900, Konica 7416 and as the Lexmark Optra E and as the Epson EPL-5500 and EPL 6200. There are varying degrees of resemblance between the formatters and the cartridges can be rather different.

Comparable products are the Brother HL-2035, Samsung ML-1910 and the HP Laserjet P1505.

Control:

The Aculaser M1200 just has a blue "Ready" light and an orange error light. As usual the lights flash to indicate error conditions. Otherwise control is via the printer drivers.

Duty Cycle:

Maximum monthly volume 15,000 pages/month. This is unusually robust for a low cost printer but probably justified - the engine design was originally aimed at office use.

First page out time 10.2 sec

600 dpi. The EPL 6200 has 1200dpi resolution so the comparatively low resolution of the M1200 might be dissapointing. However people don't buy a mono printer for photographs any more and 600dpi is more than adequate for text.
