HP 5851-3580 ADF Pickup Load Arm and Bogey

This is the pickup arm assembly for the automatic document feeder (ADF) is a range of HP printers. The part provides the support arm and drive shaft and the whole bogey including the gears and the pickup rollers.

Another partQ3948-67904only provides the bogey but also includes a separation pad - this might be better choice. According to HP sources it is intended for the2820/2830/2840 series   although we can see no reason the parts cannot be used on other printers.

It seems possible that this part also fits other printers with a sideways feeding ADF but information from HP does not actually say so.

This part does not fit the Laserjet3015   or Laserjet   3050  which both have fax-like feed paths from back to front of the machine.

The rollers in these assemblies wear out like any other feed roller. The individual rollers are held into a little assembly by a couple of screws so they are not particularly easy to change individually. The 5851-3580 comes complete with instruction sheet 5851-2559.

Fitting

A brief outline is to open the ADF cover, it hinges to the left.   The pickup roller load arm can be seen running across the top of the ADF.   There is a spring at the front end of the load-arm which should be unhooked and retained. The ADF then hinges up and lifts out.   The replacement is installed by reversing those actions and replacing the spring.

Other Uses

This assembly is used as a part in theQ3948-67903  which is almost the whole inner part of the ADF for the CLJ 2820/2830/2840 printers including the motor and opto-sensors.

This assembly includes the C8187-67533 which is the bogey and rollers on their own, however that part contains less, costs more and is slightly more difficult to change. (The price of spares is largely determined by manufacturers prices to us and does not always seem logical).

If you don't want to change the entire assembly the roller sub-assembly C8187-67533 pops out when the green button in the middle is pressed. It goes back in easily enough when it is the right way round.

Very close view showing the texture on the rollers. If your rollers have worn they will be shiny and the ADF will frequently misfeed.
