HP Color Inkjet Printer CP1160

HP Color Inkjet Printer cp1160 is a desktop color Inkjet that delivers high-quality text and color documents. It was intended to be "business class" - to fill the gap between the low cost but poor reliability of home-oriented inkjets and the high price of colour laser printers at the time. It was launched around 2001 and whilst laser printers this age may still be in use it is unlikely that this inkjet model is.

These were two models:

  • HP Color Inkjet Printer cp1160 - C6436A - Worldwide
  • HP Color Inkjet Printer cp1160tn - C6436D - extra 250 sheet tray, Jetdirect 200m server. Said to be North America only

The printer is unusual in having a flat top that does not have to be opened; it will bear some weight if needed. Paper and ink supplies can be be completely loaded from the front, allowing the printer to be placed on a shelf. An LCD status panel shows ink levels. There is also Automatic cartridge alignment and Automatic media sensing.

Generally this model impressed reviewers, doing a good job with text output on plain copier paper. the operating price was estimated at 2.3p per page mono and 8.8p per page colour - not including the paper. Photo output tended to be a bit blurred on plain paper and the cost of special inkjet paper would drive up the printing costs.

The real wierdness is the ink system. The printer has separate printheads which is good. For some reason HP have then put the colour in a tricolour cartridge rather than in 3 separate cartridges. Perhaps this was done to reduce the number of components needed but the printer still has 6 components - 4 heads a black cartridge and the tricolour cartridge.

Control:

Icon driven LCD Status monitor on the on the front showing ink levels at a glance when the printer is turned on. The LCD also gives status and error messages.

Duty Cycle:

HP suggest a maximum of 5,000 pages per month. This suggests they consider the build to be robust for an inkjet.

Service:

There are limited repair and service options for these printers. For the most part they suffer the same faults as all inkjets - ink dries in the nozzles. This is likely after the printer has not been used for some time and is difficult to shift and possibly uneconomic because of the price of a complete set of inks and heads.
