HP Color Laserjet 1500 Series Printer

Affordable entry level colour laser printer. Creates professional documents for small businesses and home offices. Host-based printer makes use of the users computer for job processing. The CLJ 2500 (C9706A) is based on the same engine but has its own formatter if a more capable machine is wanted. As well as using the host processor for page formatting the CLJ1500 is limited to a USB connection.

The LJ 1500, 2500 and their successor the 2550 use 4-pass laserprint technology - a carousel puts the toner/developer cartridges next to the drum. The printer works quite quickly at up to 16 pages per minute for black prints but more slowly at 4 pages per minute for colour prints because of the carousel movements.

Control:

Simple buttons and LED controls. See the user manual for the meaning of flashing-light codes.

Duty Cycle:

HP give the maximum monthly duty cycle as 30,000 pages per month. In practice the 5,000 page black and 4,000 page colour toner life suggests this printer will normally do light duty.

Print Speed:

Print speed up to 16ppm black or 4ppm in colour.

Copy Abilities:

The engine re-appeared as the CLJ 2820 / 2840 multifunction printer/copier.

Print Resolution:

True 600-by-600 dots per inch (dpi) text and graphics. ImageREt 2400 provides 2,400-dpi color laser print quality through a multilevel printing process.

Paper Handling:

A4 and letter. Multifunction tray 1. Optional tray 2 for 250 sheets copier paper.

Tray 1:Multifuctional for letterhead, labels and heavy paper.
Tray 2:Optional tray 2 included with 1500 model.

Face Down:

Output is normally to a face-down tray on top of the printer.

Duplex:

Manual supported in software. No Auto-duplex option.

Hi-Speed USB on the CLJ 1500 (The CLJ 2500 also has an EIO slot and IEEE 1284-B Parallel)

Possible via external JetDirect (The CLJ1500 may be host-based but it can take the data from a network connected PC). External HP Jetdirect print servers compatible with the CLJ1500 are the HP Jetdirect 175x (model J6035A), the HP Jetdirect 310x (model J6038A), and the HP Jetdirect en3700 (model J7942A).

Host based printing only. (Linux CUPS supports these printers using drivers for the Oak chip used ) The CLJ 2500 has PCL 5, PCL6 and PostScript Level 3.

The print mechanism uses four toner/developers in a carousel working to a single imaging drum.Print supplies level shown by LEDs in a simple control panel.Cartridges, imaging drum and fuser are common to the 1500/2500 series. The later 2550 takes a different set of major parts.Errors: The Attention LED flashing suggests paper out, paper jam, no toner installed or toner cartridge door open.If Attention is flashing and the Go light is solid press Go to continue.If the error persists press both Go and Job Cancel at the same time to get the secondary error code. These are listed in the manual.

Alternative remanufactured cartridges. Remanufactured cartridges can substantially reduce the cost of printing however they are not rcommended where colour accuracy is required - design proofs and photographic work for instance. These printers are not really accurate enough for those purposes of course, so that may not matter.

Fuser:

The fuser in a laser printer uses heat and pressure to bond the wax-resin toner into the paper. Over time the fusers working surfaces wear out and it is also possible for the heater to fail. Although fusers can be repaired the job is generally regarded as uneconomic and the usual approach is to replace the whole unit.
