HP Color Laserjet 3000 Printer Series

Colour laser printer with duplex and network options and high speed output, up to 29ppm black, and 15ppm colour. Suited to small to medium sized workgroups of up to 10 people. The CLJ 3000 aims to give good mono performance with colour when it's needed.

The CLJ 3000 has network, duplex and extra-tray models:

The CLJ 3000 is one of a series introduced by HP in October 2005. Its special feature is the quick black print. Others in this printer family are:

CLJ3600 is 17ppm mono and colour. It has HP Imageret 3600 for improved photo printing. However the CLJ 3600 achieves economy by using host-based print. Most of the parts are the same as those on the CLJ 3000 but the print cartridges are different. It has no EIO slot and a different laser assembly.

CLJ3800 prints colour quickly - 21ppm in mono and colour. This printer, like the CLJ3000 is a fully independent machine with support for conventional PCL and PostScript languages. The CLJ 3600 and 3800 use the same black cartridge but the colour cartridges are different.

The engine is Canon based and uses an inline arrangement of cartridges. The mechanism is similar to those of the Color LaserJet 2600 and Color LaserJet 4700 but has performance and price between those models.

CLJ_CP3505 is a successor model very similar to the CLJ 3800 with a speed on 21 pages per minute.

The CLJ2700 is an older version of the CLJ3000 with the same engine and cartridges. It doesn't have the duplex or extra tray options.

Most of the parts and features of the CLJ 3000 are identical to those on the CLJ 3600 and since that seems to be the more popular printer a fuller parts list and instructions on how to change the fuser, ETB and rollers are given on that page.

Control:

Intuitive 2-line LCD display shows toner levels and has a built-in help function for menus. Colour access controls on the CLJ3000 and CLJ3800 allow who uses colour when and how to be controlled.

Duty Cycle:

60,000 pages per month. As usual with HP duty cycles this is intended to suggest the printer is fairly robust. An actual attempt to put 60,000 pages through it will consume about 10 black cartridges at 5% page cover. If long production runs of newsletter or catalogues are wanted a better choice would be the CLJ4700, CP4005 or CP6015. Recent printers that might match these needs are the CP4025 and CP4525.

Print Speed:

Plain black print speed is 29 ppm; this high mono speed is not present on the CLJ3600 and CLJ3800 models.

Colour speed is 15ppm. First page in under 11 seconds with instant-on fuser. Fast return to power powersave mode minimising power consumption and noise.

Print Resolution:

Up to 600 x 600 dpi. Enhanced by HP ImageREt 2400 to the equivalent of 2400x2400dpi. HP ColorSphere toner further enhance print accuracy.

Paper Handling:

A4. Maximum 3 trays. Multipurpose tray 100 sheet, Tray 2 250 sheets. Optional Tray 3 500 sheets. Default output is to a 250 sheet output bin on top of the printer with an extendable long-paper support.

Tray 1:100 sheet multipurpose tray allowing manual and automatic feeding of letterhead and speciality paper. Paper dimensions 76 x 127 to 216 x 356 mm weight 60 to 175 g/m2.
Tray 2:250 sheet slide-in cassette built into the printer base. Paper dimensions 148 x 210 to 216 x 356 mm weigth 60 to 120 g/m2.
Tray 3:Optional 500 sheet tray placed under the printer. Paper specifications as for tray 2; 148 x 210 to 216 x 356 mm weigth 60 to 120 g/m2.

Duplex:

Optional Auto-duplex is built in on DN and DTN models. The duplex unit handles paper weights from 60 to 120 g/m2

Processor:

MIPS 20KC processor at 533MHz.

Memory:

64MB RAM on the base model later improved to 128MB. 128MB on the DN and DTN later upgraded to 256MB. Expandable to 512MB. Memory is DDR type. (Various HP PDFs give different memory complements).

Interface:

USB 2.0 and one of the proprietary HP EIO slots.

Network:

The EIO slot is populated with a Jetdirect on N models. External USB JetDirects such as the 175x, EN1700, EN3700 and EW2400 can be used as well.

Consumables:

The main consumable is the set of four colour print cartridges containing the toner, developer, drum and waste hopper. Cartridges for the CLJ 3000 are the same as those used for the CLJ2700 - but won't fit the CLJ 3600 and CLJ 3800. The consumables have "smart-print technology for consistent performance, easy maintenance and automatic supplies" reordering; or to put it another way they are "chipped".

The different yields from what are essentially the same cartridge show HP jockeying with the "value proposition" each printer represents in a competitive market.

Fuser:

As usual with laser printers there is a 220 volt fuser for the UK, Europe etc and a 110 volt model for the US and Japan.

Spares:

The main spares required are the paper handling rollers and separation pads. Rollers wear and the rubber components age. Pads are worn by contact with paper. The main list of spares for this printer engine is on the CLJ 3600 page.
