HP Color LaserJet 4600

The CLJ 4600 is a colour laser printer achieving a reasonable speed and print quality thanks to inline print elements and direct to page printing. The machine is old, but it was well made, so in 2014 they are still in service and parts are available.

When the machine was launched in 2002 the print speed of 16 pages per minute was fast, now it is not so impressive but it is still often adequate. Print quality is quite good as well, the engine resolution is just 600dpi but some recent colour printers don't actually do much better. Later models based on the same engine improved the image enhancement rather than hardware. Economics are not bad even with HP original cartridges. Of course, more than a decade after the printer was introduced refurbishers and refillers can do a good job providing cartridges, so if you are willing to experiment it is possible to run these machines at low cost.

The CLJ-4600 was something of a breakthrough for HP at the time. On colour print tasks the CLJ 4600 was four times faster than its predecessor the 4500/4550. The design and pricing targeted volume production or as a main printer for large workgroups. Now, of course, it may be a bit slow for those jobs.

The design proved a success. In 2004-5 it was updated to the rather faster CLJ-4650. The CLJ-4700 is clearly related but pushed the speed further, up to 30 pages per minute and with more expansion options. It also improved the paper handling, doing away with the CLJ-4600's rather ephemeral quater-moon rollers and using the LaserJet 4200 style triple roller mechanism. A mutifunction copier version is the CM4730 which looks rather different - the engine is turned through 90 degrees anticlockwise. The design principles survived into the CP4005 in 2006.

After that HP changed their approach, going for a longer lower design with a secondary transfer roller. The direct equivalent to the CLJ-4600 is the CP4025n and just as an indication they are priced around £660 before tax for the base model. It definitely can be worth fixing a CLJ-4600.

As usual, it isn't much help to customers buying cartridges to knowing the relationship between these machines - consumables are chipped to the correct model. It is of interest to technicians because faults, behaviours and repair approaches survive across models.

Engineers with wide experience of laser printers will have noticed that the family of laser printers HP introduced from 2002 share design principles - not usually parts. However rather bizzarely the CLJ-4600 does share a formatter board with the CLJ-5500.

  • Color LaserJet 4600dtn - C9662A - duplexer, tray 3 and network
  • Color LaserJet 4600hdn - C9663A -hard disk, duplexer, tray 3 and network

A 500 sheet extra tray 3 is part C9664A.

Control:

Graphic display control panel with graphic animated help messages. Embedded web server for support and supplies ordering. Network versions have JetDirect 610n and HP Web Jetadmin software.

Duty Cycle:

85,000 pages per month.

Monochrome or colour A4 16 ppm. Letter 17ppm First page out in 2 minutes from cold start. After that under 20 seconds from powersave state.

Print-engine native resolution is 600x600 dpi. HP Image REt 2400 uses a proprietary toner on toner blending to produce millions of solid colors and photo-realistic images. HP ColorSmartII provides automatic half-toning and color control based on data type.

Paper Handling:

Multifunction Tray for 150 pages, Integral Cassette for 500 sheets of A4 and optional extra tray.

Media from 77x127 mm (3x5 in) to legal size. Media weights from 60 to 163 g/m2 including glossy, labels, transparencies and envelopes.

Maximum capacity 512 MB of which 416MB will be useable. 10GB EIO hard disk option adds "RIP once" ability for faster multiple prints and job retention and personal identification number (PIN) printing.
