HP Color LaserJet 4650

The CLJ 4650 is a color laser printer with four inline print elements and direct to page printing giving high speed 22 page per minute colour printing on A4. The CLJ 4650 has a faster processor and more memory than its predecessor the CLJ 4600.Other improvements are HP ImageREt 3600 for better imaging and an improved paper capacity of 1600 sheets. Aimed as a main printer for large workgroups it is also quite often used for volume production work of things like leaflets and catalogues.

There are 5 models:

  • HP Color LaserJet 4650 Printer - Q3668A - base model.
  • Color LaserJet 4650n Printer - Q3669A - network.
  • HP Color LaserJet 4650dn Printer - Q3670A - network, duplex.
  • HP Color LaserJet 4650dtn Printer - Q3671A - network, duplex + tray 3.
  • HP Color LaserJet 4650hdn Printer - Q3672A - disk, duplex, network, tray 3 + 4 unit.

The CLJ 4650 was introduced in June 2004. It was succeeded by the CLJ 4700 which also appeared in multifunction versions as the CM4730MFP. Anoher successor product was the Color LaserJet CP4005.

These are rather old printers - few computers last five years, never mind ten.

Computers obey Moore's Law. The computing power of a six year old computer is 8 to 10 times less than that of a brand new equivalent. When you try to use an old computer with new software it will be rather unreponsive; extra memory will help but never entirely shift the problem.

Printers have processors and memory so things innevitably move in the same way. However a printer is limited by physics and human sight, so they may not obey the same rules. Ten years ago laser printer performance started to approach the limits of sight so it is unlikely that a new printer will give stunningly better images. Old printers were nearing

Control:

Graphic display control panel with graphic animated help messages. Embedded web server for support and supplies ordering. Network versions have JetDirect 620n and HP Web Jetadmin software.

Duty Cycle:

85,000 pages per month. The page per month figure may not be merely academic for these printers as they are quite often used to produce newsletters and catalogue runs. Cartridge yield 8,000 pages colour, 9,000 pages black.

Print speeds A4/Letter 22 pages per minute, First page out in 2 minutes from cold start. After that under 18 seconds from powersave state.

Copy Abilities:

The 4730MFP and CM4730 are copiers based on this print engine.

Print-engine native resolution is 600x600 dpi.HP Image REt 3600 uses a proprietary toner on toner blending to produce millions of solid colors and photo-realistic images. HP ColorSmartII provides automatic half-toning and color control based on data type.

Paper Handling:

Paper Handling - A4, A5, B5 etc. Up to 4 trays. Multifunction 100 sheet, Tray 2 500 sheet. Trays 3 + 4 500 media from 77x127 mm (3x5 in) to legal size. Media weights from 60 to 163 g/m2 including glossy, labels, transparencies and envelopes.

Print on Color LaserJet transparencies and glossy paper.

  • Tray 1:100-sheet multipurpose, 3x5 to 8.5x14.
  • Tray 2:500-sheet input tray, A5 through legal (inculdes A4) 60 to 105 g/m.
  • Tray 3:Optional Tray 3: 500-sheet + feeder, B5 through legal (inc A4).
  • Tray 4:Optional Tray 3+4 assembly: has 2 x 500-sheet + feeder, B5 through legal (inc A4).

Face Down:

Default output is to the face-down unit on top of the printer.

Built in on "D" models

533MHZ RISC processor.

Memory:

Base model 160MB. 2 x 200 pin DDR SDRAM DIMM slots. 3 flash memory slots. Maximum capacity 544MB. Hard disk adds "RIP once" ability for faster multiple prints, fonts macros, job storage, PIN printing.

Interface:

Parallel IEEE 1284-C, USB 1.1. 3 x EIO slots.

Network:

JetDirect 620n installed in an EIO slot on "N" models.

PCL5c, PCL 6, and Emulated PostScript Level 3. Automatic language switching.

System Compatability:

Microsoft Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP. Apple MAc OS 8.6 and above. Any PostScript system.

Base model 20x18.9x22.3 inches

Consumables:

The printer needs four print cartridges after printing around 8,000 pages. The cartridge yield assumes a page cover around 5%. Print cartridges are the same as those used in the CLJ 4600. The image transfer belt has a page yield around 120,000 pages and is also as for the CLJ 4600. Fusers are different (reflecting the higher speed?) and have a life around 150,000 pages.

Maintenance Kit:

There isn't an explicit HP Maintenance kit, rollers will have a similar life to the fuser and can be purchased at the same time. (Buy a fuser and a paper feed repair kit)

Fuser

As usual with fusers there is a 220 volt model for the UK, Europe etc and a 110 volt model for the US and Japan.

Fusers for the CLJ 4650 cannot be used in the CLJ 4600. The 4650 fuser has a black helical gear with diagonal teeth rather than a white spur gear with straight teeth. Despite this the fuser will roughly fit in the space - but will give a 50.4 error because the pinout for the connector is different.

Spares:

The HP CLJ 4650 looks very similar to its predecessor the HP CLJ 4600 but is faster. As sometimes hapopens when an engine is speeded up very few of the parts are common between them, there were numerous refinements.
