HP Color LaserJet CP3505 Series Printer

HP's Color LaserJet CP3505 is a fairly fast A4 colour laser printer aimed at "workteams". It was launched in 2007 and was the last machine to use the "CLJ-3600" engine which also appeared in the CLJ-2700, 3000, 3600 and 3800. Nearly ten years later there are still a lot of these machines in use; they take nice big cartridges. Performance isn't quite in line with today's specification; print speed is 21 pages per minute and first page out in less than 13 seconds. Inline cartridge arrangement gives the same high speed in black and colour. The base models are economical to buy (circa GBP 380) and the 6,000 page capacity cartridges match the needs of office use.

The CP3505 was introduced in June 2007; it is a direct replacement for the CLJ3800 and uses the same print cartridges. One difference is that this newer model has more memory and higher engine resolution.

The printer uses the same Canon engine as the LBP5300, LBP5360, MF8450 etc. It seems to have been most popular as HP's CLJ 3600 - the series originated with the CLJ 2700 and they all share many parts including the fuser and transfer belt. A larger writeup is on our CLJ-3600 page.

Printers in the same class include Xerox Phaser 8560 solid ink printer and the Lexmark C534.

Control:

Menu buttons and a 2 line LCD for messages. HP Color Access Control. Compatible with HP's Universal Print Driver and HP's suite of printer management tools. These machines have a comprehensive web server providing service provider, IT administrator and user support levels. There are device status and supplies status pages, an error log, usage statistics and diagnostics.

Duty Cycle:

Up to 65,000 pages per month. Print cartridge life is 6,000 pages for black and the colours. Recommended volume 1,500 to 5,000 pages.

Print Speed:

21 pages per minute. First page out in under 13 seconds from "ready". Instant-On provides a page in 17 seconds from other states.

Print Resolution:

Engine resolution up to 1200x600 dpi in black and colour. This is an improvement on the CLJ 3800 which had an engine resolution of 600x600dpi. HP ImageREt 3600 provides good photo handling.

Paper Handling:

A4, A5, B5, C5, from 3x5 to 8.5x14 inches (76x127 to 216x356mm). Print margins are 5mm on all sides.

Tray 2:250 sheets normally in the A4 - A5 range. 148x210 to 216x356 mm. 60 to 120 gsm.
Tray 3:An optional tray 3 with a capacity of up to 500 sheets with paper sizes as for tray 2. Adding tray 3 allows tray 1 to be used for envelopes, tray 2 for letterhead and tray 3 for plain paper. Another use for tray 3 is simply to allow the printer to run attended for longer periods - reducing the need for people to fill up the trays. Tray 3 is included on the "X" model and it is usually more economical to purchase it this way - trays tend to be quite expensive when bought as separate items.

Duplex:

The duplex option can handle 60 to 120 g/m2. Duplex printers take a different transfer belt. The duplex mechanism is included on the "DN" and "X" models.

Base models 256MB, "dn" and "x" models 384MB. Memory expandable to 1GB. Single 200 pin SODIMM slot for DDR2-SDRAM. Optional 40GB hard disk.

Interface:

Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port, Host-USB accessory slot. A "JetDirect" print server is embedded on "N" models. There is also 1 available EIO slot for optional network adapters, IEEE 1284B parallel port or hard disk. The single slot could be an issue where complicated use is envisaged.

HP PCL 5, HP PCL 6, HP PostScript Level 3 and Direct PDF v1.4. Compatible with Microsoft, Apple and Linux systems.

Spares:
