HP Designjet 130

A1+ large format colour printer allowing 24 inch media width-sufficient for poster size. Thermal inkjet with 6 separate cartridges and heads using fade-resistant dye-based Vivera inks (CcMmYK). Color layering layering ultra-small 4 picolitre drops within a single dot give smooth tonal transitions and virtually grain free images.

DesignJet 130 series printers have an internal automatic closed-loop colour calibration to provide consistent colour between prints and between printers. The "GP" model has an external colorimeter to match monitor to print.

The DesignJet 130 was very popular with architects and consulting engineers because it gave big-printer plots at a reasonable purchase price. The first brochures we have for it are dated 2003 and the last 2009 and a 7 year life-span is good going for what is (essentially) an inkjet.

HP has split the market subsequent to the Designjet 130: engineers go one way and graphics artists another.

Replacements for engineering are essentially the T120 which is 24 inch only and comes without a stand priced at (unavailable) and the T520 available in 24 inch width at (unavailable) and 36 inch width at (unavailable)- both with a stand.

For Graphic arts and photography the recommended replacement might be the Z2100 24 inch printer at (unavailable) or the Z2100 44 inch machine at (unavailable) .

EFI and third-party RIPS are available.

The DesignJet 130 looks similar to the Designjet 120 and shares many of the same parts. The main difference is a different set of cartridges and printheads for the colours.

The Designjet 30 is an A3 13 inch wide version suited to proofing and smaller engineering diagrams. None of the entry level designjets is truly terrific for photography - they don't have enough inks to give the best possible colour gamut.

Control:

LCD Display, power, stop and go/feed keys.

The LCD display is unusual - it's just a block display with a symbol for maintenance and bar-graphs for the consumables.

The printer indicates error codes using the bar graphs which are then interpreted as a two digit error code number and a sub-code. (Its similar to the approach used with laser printers that just have LED indicators)

11 pages per minute for A4/letter in fast mode. 90 seconds per page for a 2x3 foot drawing in fast mode. 17.5 minutes to complete a glossy D sized page in best mode. (A bit faster than the DesignJet 120)

Note that the block-graphics used to show consumable levels are also used to give error codes. An apparently crazy display - magenta and yellow showing empty when they are not for instance - is actually an error message. The little spanner and screwdriver symbol will be on if the display is an error message.

Note that changing some parts may require the colour calibrations to be re-run. Printhead Alignment is launched automatically when a printhead is replaced, the printer prints a page then scans it to adjust the printheads. Colour calibration may be needed after a printhead is replaced or at intervals to get colour appearance right. Accuracy calibration is only intended to be run in a repair centre.
