HP Designjet 500

HP's Designjet 500 series are "A1" (24 inch) and "A0+" (42 inch) printer/plotters based on inkjet technology.

These have been real industry workhorses, very popular in design, architecture, landscaping and cartography. The first brochure we have dates from October 2000 and the Desgnjet 510 replaced it around 2008 - its life overlapping the Z-series a bit as HP positioned themselves to produce an 8-ink photographic system.

The machines are arge format printers usually mounted on a stand with choice of 24 inch or 42 inch path. Most models are four colour thermal inkjet with 1200x600 dpi which HP's brochures said gave "photographic quality" and "ultimate" line quality. They are good - but subsequently HP has introduced 6, 8 and ten colour machines that are presumably better? So whilst we come across quite a lot of people using the Designjet 500 for photographic work it is no longer the best tool for the job.

Cartridges for each ink are 69cc giving a life appropriate for small workgroups. HP boast a "very low cost per copy". An ink-set change takes 1 minute. Printheads are long life

The DesignJet 500 series takes sheet and roll fed media in a wide variety, including heavyweight coated and studio canvas. An automatic cutter trims roll-fed media leaving just 17mm of margin.

There are ten models in the series:

A mono version for basic engineering

  • Designjet 500 mono A1 or D sized - C7769E - 610mm (24 inch) and
  • Designjet 500 mono A0 or E sized - C7770E - 1067mm (42 inches)

There are a series of colour models.

  • Designjet 500 colour A1 or D sized - C7769B - 610mm (24 inch) and
  • Designjet 500 colour A0 or E sized - C7770B - 1067mm (42 inches)

The basic designjet has several accessories including an HP-GL/2 card which will speed up engineering drawings. The EFI Designer Edition for HP RIP can be added to give colour management.

"PS" models are supplied with a software PostScrip RIP; EFI Designer Edition _XL_ Software RIP for Mac and Windows.

"Plus" models have a 32MB base memory and the HP-GL/2 card built in:

  • Designjet 500+ colour A0 or E sized - C7770F - 1067mm (42 inches)

The 500 PS Plus adds the EFI Designer Edition _XL_ Software RIP for Mac and Windows with closed loop colour calibration.

  • Designjet 500PS+ colour A1 or D sized - C7769G - 610mm (24 inch)
  • Designjet 500PS+ colour A0 or E sized - C7770G - 1067mm (42 inches)

The Designjet 510 is an updated model replacing the 500 series.

The DesignJet 800 models are very similar but with an integral RIP aimed at larger workgroups. The 800 series were replaced by the T1100.

Control:

Front LCD Panel.

Fast mode D sized architectural line drawings in 90 seconds. Colour images: 85 sq ft per hour.

1200 dpi x 600 dpi. Minimum line width is 0.0423mm and Line accuracy is +/- 0.2% or 0.38mm whichever is greater.

Paper Handling:

A0+ (42 inch) and A1 (24 inch). Sheet feed, roll feed, automatic cutter.

Memory:

16 MB RAM standard, 160 MB max. (using HP-GL/2)

Interface:

USB 2.0 IEEE 1284 compliant Centronics parallel.

Standard on all models is HP_PCL3-GUI. HP-GL/2: optional. PostScript is added to local computers as a software RIP for Windows and Mac.

Microsoft Windows 9x, NT4, 2000 (note only Windows 98 SR2 and 2000 support USB. Apple Mac. AutoCAD)

Spares:

The main spare needed is the carriage belt - it takes a lot of wear as the heads move back and forth. The carriage trailing cable also wears out due to frictional contact with the base of the machine - the tracks become exposed and crack. The encoder strip gets its marks scuffed. Eventually the ink tubes will spring a leak.

Although the life of these parts can be quite different it is often convenient to replace them all at once, to do this buy a maintenance kit.

C7769-60374, Service Station - Includes wipers, pen caps, and the right hand spittoon. Installed in the right side of printer. Used in the Designjet 500 and 510 24 inch and 42 inch. Also used in the Designjet 800 series. This is the replacement for part C7769-60149 mentioned in the service manual. It fits behind the control panel. Replacement requires the service utility "Unlock Carriage" then turn the machine off. Remove the right hand cover. Push the carriage out of the service station. Disconnect the service station and aerosol fan cables. Remove 2 x T-15 screws from inside the service station. Lift the carriage lock and the service station slides out of the printer. There are illustrations in the service manual.

C7769-60165, Left Spittoon - Contains absorbers to take excess ink from the printheads. Used in the Designjet 500 and 510 24 inch and 42 inch. Also used in the Designjet 800 series. This is the spitton mentioned in the service manual on the left of the machine. Remove the left cover, release the cables attached to the spitton and press in the two clips on the lip of the spittoon to lift it out.
