HP Designjet 800

The DesignJet 800 is a large format printer with choice of 24 inch or 42 inch path. It was intended for professional use in large workgroups but may be a long in the tooth for that job now as it was launched in 2000. Not obsolete perhaps but obsolescent.   The mechanism is much the same as that of the DesignJet 500 - except that the DesignJet 800 has a built in RIP capacity for HP-GL/2 and Adobe PostScript 3. The RIP offloads part of the burden of processing files from PCs. HP-GL-2 and PostScript are vector languages and tend to be the natural way to express diagrams. PostScript is very much the graphics trade's standard language and since operating system APIs tend to work in a similar fashion the interaction can be very efficient.

The DesignJet 500 was a cost - reduced version of the Designjet 800. It has a PostScript RIP but that is implemented as part of the driver running on the user PC so the output to the printer is a raster scan using the HP-PCL3-GUI language. Vector Language HP_GL/2 was available with an optional formatter.

The DesignJet 800 has a processor (RIP or formatter) to handle the higher level languages.

Ink System

The DesignJet 800 is a four colour thermal inkjet with 2400x1200 dpi handling complex diagrams and giving what HP called "photographic quality" at the time. Obviously a four-colour printer is nowhere near what would now be regarded as photo quality.

Cartridges for each ink are 69cc giving a life appropriate for small workgroups. HP boast a "very low cost per copy". An ink-set change takes 1 minute. Printheads are long life

Paper Handling

The DesignJet 800 series takes sheet and roll fed media in a wide variety, including heavyweight coated and studio canvas. An automatic cutter trims roll-fed media leaving just 5mm of margins at the side and 17mm of margin at the leading and trailing edges.

There are a series of colour models. The basic models don't include PostScript

  • Designjet 800 colour A1 or D sized - C7779B - 610mm (24 inch) and
  • Designjet 800 colour A0 or E sized - C7780B - 1067mm (42 inches)

"PS" models are supplied with a built in Adobe PostScrip RIP:

  • Designjet 800PS colour A1 or D sized - C7779C - 610mm (24 inch) and
  • Designjet 800PS colour A0 or E sized - C7780C - 1067mm (42 inches)

The designjet 815MFP has an integrated scanner and control station - Q1279A

There is also a CC800PS -Q1262A- which is the colour copier version -it has a 42 inch scanner on top.

The DesignJet 500 models are very similar but with 1200x600 dpi resolution and a software RIP. The DesignJet 800 has a higher purchase price but moves the processing burden from the users PC into the printer. The DesignJet 500 is suited to individuals and small workgroups. The DesignJet 800 uses the same engine to handle larger workgroups.

Control:

Front LCD Panel with easy to navigate menus.

Fast mode D sized architectural line drawings in 60 seconds. Possibly faster than the DesignJet 500 thanks to language and memory abilities. Otherwise the specification is the same.

Resolution: 2400x1200 dpi. Minimum line width is 0.0423mm (0.002 inch) and Line accuracy is +/- 0.2% or 0.38mm whichever is greater.

Paper Handling:

A0+ 42 inch and A1 24 inch paper. Sheet feed, roll feed, automatic cutter.

Memory:

96 MB RAM standard, 160 MB max on base model. PS models have the maximum of 160MB pre-installed. 6GB disk on all models provides spooling.

Interface:

USB 1.1. IEEE 1284 compliant Centronics parallel (ECP).

Network:

EIO Slot with JetDirect installed.

Standard on all models is HP-GL/2, HP RTL and CALS G4 HP-GL/2: The 800PS also has Adobe PostScript 3. ZEHRaster Plus software allows TIFF, JPEG and CALS files to be printed from Unix, Linux and Windows NT.

Inks are pigment based black, dye based cyan, magenta and yellow. Printheads are HP No 11. Black is No 10. Colours are No 82.

Spares:

The main spare needed is the carriage belt - it takes a lot of wear as the heads move back and forth. The carriage trailing cable also wears out due to frictional contact with the base of the machine - the tracks become exposed and crack. The encoder strip gets its marks scuffed. Eventually the ink tubes will spring a leak.

Although the life of these parts can be quite different it is often convenient to replace them all at once, to do this buy a maintenance kit.

Also used in the Designjet 800 series. This is the replacement for part C7769-60149 mentioned in the service manual. It fits behind the control panel. Replacement requires the service utility "Unlock Carriage" then turn the machine off. Remove the right hand cover. Push the carriage out of the service station. Disconnect the service station and aerosol fan cables. Remove 2 x T-15 screws from inside the service station. Lift the carriage lock and the service station slides out of the printer. There are illustrations in the service manual.

C7769-60165, Left Spittoon - Contains absorbers to take excess ink from the printheads. Used in the Designjet 500 and 510 24 inch and 42 inch. Also used in the Designjet 800 series. This is the spitton mentioned in the service manual on the left of the machine. Remove the left cover, release the cables attached to the spitton and press in the two clips on the lip of the spittoon to lift it out.
