HP DesignJet Z2100

HP's DesignJet Z2100 is an 8 ink wide-body photo printer introduced in 2006; its the first of the new-styled DesignJets.

Fast, large format thermal inkjet based colour printer / plotter aimed at pre-press and photographic uses. This printer was fast for its time, based on printheads with 1056 nozzles per colour - deilvering a wide swath at each pass. The colour performance is enhanced by using 8 Vivera inks: Cyan, Light Cyan, Magenta, Light Magenta, Yellow and three black components - a photo black, matte black and a grey. The three black components allow the printer to produce convincing black backgrounds but also to handle soft tones, metallic shading and give accurate production of a 0.0423 mm minimum line width. The printer has two more inks than the T610/ T1100 allowing it to produce many of the subtle colours found in photographic material.

Z3100ps 12 ink PostScript Printer 24 inch Q5670A
Z3100ps 12 ink PostScript Printer 44 inch Q6660A

An embedded spectrophotometer enables the printer to automatically generate custom ICC profiles for user chosen paper in less than 20 minutes. The colour calibration gives consistent colour quality over time and across the DesignJet Z series.

The DesignJet Z2100 comes equipped with a network port for workgroup use:

DesignJet Z2100 - Q6675A - 24-in Printer - 610mm print width. DesignJet Z2100 GP - Q6675B - 24-in Printer plus HP Advance profiling. DesignJet Z2100 - Q6677A- 44-in Printer - 1118mm print width

Both printers come with a stand and rear tray.

Alternatives to the Z2100 are:

The "T" series printers with a 6 ink system mainly aimed at technical drawing. It's a similar printer but lacks the light cyan and light magenta inks that give the Z2100 it's colour range.

The Z3100 printers with a 12 ink system aimed at producing even higher quality photographic material. The inks include a gloss enhancer to reduce bronzing and metamerism.

Control:

240 x 160 graphical display. HP Web JetAdmin. HP Easy Print Care allows monitoring of printer supplies and status.

The PCL 3GUI print language is a compressed raster format used to transfer images to DesignJet and other HP inkjet printers.

With PCL 3GUI the entire burden of converting the data in the graphics application on the computer to the multi-gigabte image that will be printed falls on the computer. For photography that will be reasonable - nothing else could be done.

Photographs originate as compressed bitmaps and can only be communicated to the printer as a compressed bitmap so PCL 3GUI makes sense in that job. Essentially it adds pagelength and guillotine instructions. Ideally the printer might take a RAW image but there are no standards for that sort of thing. RAW, JPEG and PDF are amongst many standards used - all are converted to the PCL-3GUI standard.

Engineering diagrams and computer generated imagery start as vectors. Converting them to vectors like HP-GL/2 or PostScript is easy. Converting vectors to the print raster is a memory hungry process and it makes more sense to send the vetors to the printer and effectively delegating it; that could speed things up and should lower the PC memory footprint .

Memory:

256MB and 40GB hard disk. (Did older models ship with 128MB RAM ?)

Interface:

The Z2100 has a high speed USB port (compatible with USB.20 specifications). There is 10/100 Ethernet RJ45 port and an unoccupied EIO slot (?).

HP PCL3GUI. There is an upgrade kit Q6692A providing HP-GL/2 for the Z2100/Z3100 Photo Series to give them technical drawing abilities.

System Compatability:

Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003. Apple Mac OS v10.2 and higher. Citrix MetaFrame.
