HP DesignJet Z3100 Series
HP's DesignJet Z3100 Series was introduced in 2006 as an "upmarket" 12 ink photographic printer which also offered a PostScript option which might match cartographic and graphics art needs.
It's a fast, large format thermal inkjet based colour printer / plotter primarily aimed at photographic uses. Using 12 inks gives a very good colour gamut. Inks are delivered by dual colour printheads with 1056 nozzles per colour deilvering 4 picoliter and 6 picoliter drops depending on the head. The large printheads are able to deliver a wide swath at each pass giving high speed even when handling accurate photographic material.
The Vivera ink set uses 12 inks:
Seven colours: Cyan, Light Cyan, Magenta, Light Magenta, Yellow, Red, Green, Blue Four black components - Photo black, Matte black, Grey and Light grey - there is also a Gloss enhancer.
The four black components allow the printer to produce vivid colour but also to handle soft tones and metallic shading. The black also gives accurate production of a 0.0423 mm minimum line width with minimal mismatch between horizontal and vertical lines. The extra colour inks help the printer to produce the wide gamut and subtle colours found in photographic material.
Whilst more colours look like more expense that isn't necessarily so. It is actually cheaper to use red than to combine magenta and yellow so depending on what is being done the ink use might be better than for a 6 or 8 ink machine. Of course there are more printheads to go wrong.
An embedded spectrophotometer enables the printer to automatically generate custom ICC profiles for user chosen paper in less than 20 minutes. The colour calibration gives consistent colour quality over time and across the DesignJet Z series.

Both printers come with a rear tray. The 44 inch printer comes with a stand as well. The 24 inch printer comes with 69ml cartridges and the 44 inch printer with 130ml catridges.

Print Speed:
A1 colour image in 2.2 minutes on coated paper. 6.1 minutes per page glossy in economy mode. In productivity quality 3.8 minutes per page on coated, 7.5 minutes on glossy. Full photo quality 9.9 minutes per page coated, 13.1 minutes glossy.
Print Resolution:
2400x1200 dpi (from 1200 dpi data). 8 Colours, Cyan, Light cyan, Magenta, Light Magenta, Yellow, Matte Black, Photo Black and Gray. 6 picolitre drops for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Matte Black. 4 pl drops for Light Cyan, Light Magenta, Grey and Photo Black.

Interface:
The Z2100 has a high speed USB port (compatible with USB.20 specifications). There is 10/100 Ethernet RJ45 port and an unoccupied EIO slot (?).

HP PCL3GUI. There is an upgrade kit Q6692A providing HP-GL/2 for the Z2100/Z3100 Photo Series to give them technical drawing abilities.
