HP Laserjet 2100 Printer Series

One of HP's first printers with 1200x1200 resolution giving improved monochrome picture ability. At launch in Autumn 1998 typically intended as a shared printer in small workgroups.

There were 5 variants:

  • HP LaserJet 2100 Printer C4170A - A 10-ppm laser printer that comes standard with a 100-sheet multi-purpose Tray 1, a 250-sheet Tray 2, and 4 MB of memory.
  • HP LaserJet 2100m Printer C4171A - A 10-ppm laser printer that comes standard with a 100-sheet multi-purpose Tray 1, a 250-sheet Tray 2, 8 MB of memory, and PostScript printing.
  • HP LaserJet 2100tn Printer - C4172A - A 10 ppm laser printer that comes standard with a 100-sheet multi-purpose Tray 1, a 250-sheet Tray 2, a 250-sheet Tray 3, 8 MB of memory, PostScript printing, and an HP Jetdirect 600 N print server card.
  • HP LaserJet 2100se Printer (US only) C4138A - A 10-ppm laser printer that comes standard with a 100-sheet multi-purpose Tray 1, a 250-sheet Tray 2, and 4 MB of memory. Bonus Mips software included.
  • HP LaserJet 2100xi Printer (US only) - C4139A - A 10-ppm laser printer that comes standard with a 100-sheet multi-purpose Tray 1, a 250-sheet Tray 2, and 4 MB of memory. Bonus Trellix software included.

Some tray variants will handle ANSI "legal" sized paper (but that isn't of interest in Europe and the UK).

The LJ2100 proved popular and was succeeded by the very similar LaserJet 2200 in Spring 2001. The design was given a more radical makeover with the LaserJet 2300 in spring 2003 and then the 2400 models in spring 2004. The P3005 were successors around 2010 and in 2016 a replacement would be the P2035, P3015 or LaserJet Pro 400 M401.

We doubt the LaserJet 2100 is much used in "corporates" anymore but it still does a quite adequate job of text processing.

Control:

3 lights and 2 buttons. Lights are Attention, Ready and Go. Buttons are Go and Cancel. The "Go" light indicates when the printer is waiting for some maual action like a sheet in the multifunction tray.

Lack of a control panel is one of the irritations - it makes it difficult to set up a network card (which is an old EIO card anyway) and means people need the user guide to guess what the flashing lights mean.

Duty Cycle:

Maximum of 15,000 pages per month. Maintenance interval given as 50,000 pages.

10 pages per minute for A4. First page out in 17 seconds.

True 1200x1200 dpi with 163 levels of gray.

Resolution Enhancement technology (REt) adjusts the size and placement of each dot on the page to produce smooth angles, curves, and edges (600 dpi only).

Paper Handling:

A4, A5, B5 paper sizes

Tray 1:Adjustable multifunction tray 1 for letterhead, envelopes, labels, transparencies, custom-sized media, postcards, and heavy paper. Up to 100 sheet capacity. Tray 1 can handle 60 to 163 g/m media via the straight through path.

Tray 2:Adjustable Tray 2 250 sheets - or an optional 250-Sheet Input Tray (Tray 3) for standard sizes of paper.

Tray 3:Optional Tray 3, 250 sheets, similar to tray 2, mounts under printer. Tray 2 and 3 can handle 60 to 105 g/m2 paper.

Face Down:

Top or rear output bins with a straight through path from Tray 1 to rear bin

Duplex:

Duplexing is manual with support in the driver. There is also support for paper saving n-up printing. There wasn't a duplex option.

Maximum Capacity: with 2x 250 sheet trays and the multifunction tray 600 sheets.

Processor:

Intel 80960JD RISC based formatter running at 66MHz

Memory:

Varies with model. The basic 2100 has just 4MB, the 2100M and 2100TN have 8MB.

Interface:

Parallel port is an IEEE 1284 type B connector run in ECP mode. There is an Apple LocalTalk port, an EIO slot and an IrDA interface accessible at the front of the printer.

Network:

Optional Jetdirect 600n fitted on "N" versions of the printer.

Network Protocols:

As per the JetDirect specification.

Built in HP_GL/2 vector graphics and PCL 6. PostScript Level 2 Emulation DIMM available. HP JetSend. Automatic language switching.

System Compatabilty:

Microsoft Windows 9x, NT4, OS/2 and Apple MAc OS 71.1. and above. Any system with PostScript support

Power:

220-240 Volt models for worldwide markets and 110-120 Volt models for the US and Japan.

Base System 230x406x420mm

Consumables:

Single easy to change cartridge with a yield of 5,000 pages at 5% cover. Economode can be set in 600 dpi mode to reduce toner use.

Fusers may also be available Refurbished. Not that whilst refurbished fusers are cheaper and generally prove reliable in long term use they can give more problems on first use. We recommend refurbished fusers for experienced technicians who have several printers available to diagnose any fault
