Replacement Printer

HP Laserjet 2200

The LaserJet 2200 series printers were HP's midrange A4 printers around the year 2000. They were originally aimed at small workgroups so they often have a Jetdirect network card installed.

  • 2200 - C7064A - base model with manual duplexing (limited availability)
  • 2200d - C7058A - duplex built into the printer
  • 2200dt - C7059A - duplex, Tray 3 as 250 sheet tray
  • 2200dn - C7063A - duplex and an EIO JetDirect print server
  • 2200dtn - C7061A - duplex, Tray 3 as 500 sheet tray
  • 2200dse - C7062A -

The LaserJet 2100 was very similar to the LJ-2200 and shares the same 5,000 page 96A cartridge.

If you need to replace a LaserJet 2200 the nearest direct equivalent in 2015 is the LaserJet P2035. It is significantly faster at 30 pages per minute (rather than 18) thanks largely to a much faster microprocessor and more RAM. The P2035 doesn't take the same cartridge; instead it has a smaller 2,300 page version. (In line with market trends to smaller cartridges).

The LaserJet M400 M401 might be worth a look as well, it is also available in an MFP (scanner, fax, printer) version as the M425. They have the CF280A (2,700 page) and CF280X (6,900 page) cartridges available.

There are arguments for keeping LaserJet 2200 printers going as well - not least, the low price per copy achievable with refilled cartridges. It is a testament to the build quality that we can even think of keeping a 15 year old machine going.

The LaserJet 2300 is very similar to the LJ-2200 but has an LCD control panel for user support. It uses the rather larger 6,000 page 10A cartridge.

The Laserjet 2200 dates back to 1999 but there are still machines in daily use in business. The limited 8 megabyte memory on basic models and slow 133Mhz formatter processor mean that some complicated pages like highly graphical web pages and PDFs might print slowly. On the other hand the printer is easy to look after. Cartridges with 5,000 page (96A) and 10,000 page capacity (96X) capacity are readily available. Compatible and refilled cartridges can get the operating cost to well under a penny per page. An attraction compared to more recent printers is that the cartridge is un-chipped so refilling is not unduly difficult.

The LaserJet 2100 and 2200 use the same engine as the Canon LBP-1000 and LBP-1310 (and PC-1060 and PC-1080f). There are cartridges compatible with both the HP 96A and Canon 32X type.

Control:

A simplified control panel with just a Go and Job Cancel button and LED status indicators. Other controls are via software. Drivers are supplied for Microsoft Windows NT4, 9X, 2000, Me, and Mac OS 7.5.5. There are scripts on the web for Unix and Linux. Linux support using CUPS or HPLIP seems trouble-free. Network models have HP Web Jetadmin.

Job Cancel - cancels a job the printer is currently busy with. Control panel lights will cycle whilst the job clears from memory and then return to ready (Ready Light On).

Go - in the ready state the Go button will print a demo page. Go will also resume printing when the printer is paused or when there is unprinted data in memory. Go will also clear some errors.

Self Test and Configuration prints when the ready light is on. Press and release both Go and Job Cancel simultaneously . If a JetDirect card is installed a second page will show its configuration.

Because these printers are quite robust and often used on a network lack of a control panel can be a nuisance. If the printer can't print configuration the easiest way to get at network configuration is to do a cold reset, after which the network adapter will attempt to get a DHCP address (which you should be able to find from the router and then connect to it through a browser.

The configuration page is one way to get error codes from the Status Log.

Cold reset sets all system parameters to factory defaults. Turn the power off. Press and hold Go. Turn the printer on continuing to hold Go until the Attention light comes on. Now release Go. The device lights will cycle a few times as the rest process runs. This also resets the EIO card.

NVRAM initialization sets all system parameters and the NVRAM to factory defaults. the procedure is as for cold reset but wait until Attention, Ready and Go lights all turn on.

There is an internal engine test button. It is located behind the EIO cover at the rear, about level with the RJ45 port on the JetDirect if one is fitted. It should only be pressed with a non conductive object and is hidden because it is not recommended for ordinary users. What is printed is a page of horizontal stripes. If the printer can do this then the basic printing functions work.

Service mode is entered by sending PJL commands to the printer. See the service manual.

Which would we rather have: a LaserJet 2200 or a new printer?

To be honest, we think the M605 is an excellent machine and in terms of price it costs less then the LJ-2200 did whilst in terms of specification it is much better

To be honest we have a couple of LJ-2200's stowed away. At the moment we use a LaserJet 4100 - very much the same generation of printer. Why? … Just intermittently it is quite handy having a control panel! We do generally prefer the older printers for ordinary office forms - cheaper to run with compatible cartridges - no killer chip!

People like the older printers because they are cheap to run. Send them a Google Map and they do sometimes run out of memory.

Error Messages:

The lights are Go (beside the large button), Ready and Attention.

Status codes are printed in a configuration page, which shows the last ten events. Press and release both Go and Job Cancel simultaneously to print the page.

A complete listing of status codes is in HP LaserJet 2200 series printer software technical reference, (C7058-90937)

Some selected errors are:

  • Ready light flashing indicates the printer is receiving data - if this continues for a long time the job may be too complicated.
  • Ready on but go never lights - temporary engine error (41.x) Press go and the page should print. Status log code 30034. If the error occurs with other pages there is an electronic fault.
  • Attention flashing can also mean a door is open, the toner cartridge is missing or finished or there is a paper jam.
  • Attention and Go flashing - Misc Interface error Status code 40067.
  • Attention on - Memory overflow (20) Press Go to resume but you may lose data. Status code 30016.
  • Go on and Attention flashing means the printer is out of paper or there is a "continuable error"
  • Go, Ready and Attention flashing means "General Continuable Error" Power off, wait, power on again. Electronic Fault.
  • Go and Ready steady - Buffer flow error (22) Status Code 30027 - Bad cable not to IEEE-1284 specifications/
  • Go, Ready and Attention steady - Fatal Error - Press Go and Job Cancel to show the secondary code. Can be:
  • Bad Connection (40) Status Code 30018 Bad connection to EIO card. Turn off and Reseat the EIO Card. Fuser error - code 50003 in the status log

Repairs and Service

The LaserJet 2200dn is generally regarded as reliable but has one noted trouble. If the machine prints single sided document with no trouble but continually jams when used for duplex print the problem is a worn residual strip on the duplex solenoid in the right hand side.
