HP Laserjet 4050
The HP LaserJet 4050 is a mono laser printer primarily for office use. It has 16 page per minute throughput so it can manage the needs of medium sized workgroups. It also has 1200dpi resolution so photographic material reproduces quite well.
The LaserJet 4050 is an improved LJ LaserJet 4000; itself developed out of the Canon EXII engine. The printer looks similar to the LJ 5 with a few cosmetic enhancements. Technically the 4050 is very similar to the 4000 and to it's successor the 4100 - its the 4200 series that mark the next significant change.
The design is quite old but hasn't been greatly surpassed. More recent printers can be faster - but speeds beyond 16 pages per minute often aren't much of an issue because they aren't a great benefit for users producing the average 5-page report. Users stapling reports or stuffing a long run of envelopes can't work much faster anyway.
The main benefit of the 4050 over the LJ4000 is probably the doubling of the base memory to 8MB and the increase in processor speed. These allow the printer to use it's full 1200x1200 dpi capability at full engine speed.
There are four configurations:
- LaserJet 4050 - C4251A - Base model. A4, 8MB RAM 1200dpi
- LaserJet 4050n - C4253A - Network model, 16MB RAM
- LaserJet 4050t - C4252A -Dual Trays
- LaserJet 4050tn - C4254A -Dual Trays and the network, 16MB RAM
- LaserJet 4050se - C4255A -
- LaserJet 4050 USB-Mac printer - C7829B
Options include a duplexer, hard disk and envelope feeder but these weren't mainstream requirements at the time the LaserJet 4050 was marketed.
The USB-Mac version was introduced because a best-selling series of Apple Macintosh computers appeared with USB ports.
The successor model is the LJ4100 which uses a much faster processor and more memory to print significantly faster at 24ppm.
Control:
2 line LCD panel and 6 buttons give intuitive navigation. The network models have an JetDirect 600n which also provides some information across the network. Unfortunately the 600n is java obsessed and the information given is mainly useful to network engineers - not for printer administration
Duty Cycle:
HPs suggested 65,000 page per month volume estimate is higher than likely use. However this is quite a robust printer and with big 10,000 page cartridges it could deliver that kind of throughput although it would then need several new fusers each year.
Print Speed:
Up to 16 pages of A4 per minute (17 ppm with letter). First page out in less than 15 seconds with instant-on fuser.
Print Resolution:
up to a true 1200 dpi. Actually 300, 600 or 1200dpi. HP "FastRes 1200" provides "1200-dpi quality at engine speed" and without generating excessive network traffic or using more printer RAM.
Paper Handling:
Its basically an A4 / letter office printer
Tray 1:is a drop-down multifunction tray on the front of the machine. There is a straight through path from tray 1 to the face-up flap at the rear of the printer for heavier media and to give curl-free printing. Media sizes from 3x5 inch to 8.5x14 inches. Weights 60 to 200 gsm.
Tray 2:is a drop-down multifunction tray on the front of the machine. There is a straight through path from tray 1 to the face-up flap at the rear of the printer for heavier media and to give curl-free printing. Media sizes from 3x5 inch to 8.5x14 inches. Weights 60 to 200 gsm.
Duplex:
There is also an optional duplexer part number C4123A - same as on the LJ 4000)
Processor:
133MHz RISC processor (a 30% improvement on the LJ4000)
Memory:
8MB basic expandable to 192MB. The base model has 3 open 100-Pin DIMM slots for EDO or SDRAM . Optional 2 and 4 MB Flash DIMMS allow extra fonts, forms and signatures to be stored. A disk can be fitted in an EIO slot.
Interface:
Parallel (IEEE-1284-B bidirectional (ECP)) Serial (RS232) 2 x EIO slots - one occupied on "n" models.
Network:
The 4000n and 4000tn have a JetDirect 600n Ethernet / LocalTalk card installed in an EIO slot, providing connectivity and JetAdmin. HP's drivers also support "Oil Change" automatic driver update.
Print Languages:
HP PCL5e, HP PCL 6, and PostScript 2 Emulation.
System Compatability:
Microsoft DOS, Windows 9x, NT4, IBM OS/2. HP-UX and Solaris. Postscript allows printing from others.
Power:
10 volt US and Japan, and 220V EU, UK models. Fast warm-up. First page out in less than 15 seconds with instant-on fuser.
