HP Laserjet 4300 Series

A series of fast A4 mono laser printers normally aimed at large "workgroup" use shared in an office. The LJ4300 handles pages at up to 43 pages per minute. Output quality is high with a resolution of 1200 dpi at full engine speed.

The built in processor and memory on these models offloads tasks from user computers quickly. Most models are easily shared via a network using HP JetDirect. There are a range of trays, a duplex unit, envelope feeder and even a stacker / stapler; an accessory not usually available in this price range.

The LJ4300 is designed for larger workgroups or environments with heavy print requirements. It takes a big 18,000 page cartridge and has a 200,000 page per month throughput rating reflecting its robust construction.

The heavy duty ability combined with the RIP-ONCE ability make this printer particular efficient for tasks such as multiple copies of catalogues and newsletters.

The LJ4200 is outwardly very similar to the LJ 4300 with a slower processor designed for lower workloads and capable of 33 page per minute throughput. The LJ4200 takes different consumables, many of the same parts and the same accessories.

The successor is the LJ 4350 which has speeds up to 55 pages per minute but is otherwise very similar.

Control:

An intuitive layout includes a 4x 20 character LCD panel which gives clear user prompts. Embedded web server and HP Web Jetadmin software on network models.

Duty Cycle:

200,000 pages per month

The LJ4300 delivers 43 pages per minute of A4 (45 of letter) at full 1200 dpi resolution. First page out in less than 8.5 seconds. RIP-ONCE delivers even faster printing of multi-copy documents.

True 1200x1200 dpi with HP Fastres and HP Prores. Ultraprecise toner gives sharp images.

Paper Handling:

A4 paper path. Capacity for up to 4 trays with 2,600 sheet capacity. (abilities and options identical to the 4200)

Tray 1:Multifunction tray for 3x5 to 8.5x14 inch paper (76x127 to 216x355 mm). Capacity up to 100 sheets. Weights 60 to 200gsm. Heavy media may need to use the straight- through path to the face-up tray.

Tray 2 Built in:for standard and some custom paper sizes, A4, A5, letter etc. Up to 500 sheets of 60 to 120 gsm weight.

Tray 3 either a 500 sheet options:as for Tray 2 or a 1500 sheet option: A4, letter and legal paper with weights of 60 to 120 gsm

There can also be a Tray 4 as for Tray 3:but only one 1500 sheet tray can be used - so there would be Tray 1: multifunction, Tray 2: built in 500 sheet, Tray 3: 500 sheet and Tray 4: 1500 sheet giving a total capacity of 2600 sheets. Paper output is normally to a 250 sheet face down unit. There is a 50 sheet face-up tray at the rear for thicker media. A 500 sheet stacker unit or a 500 sheet stacker with a stapler can be added on top of the printer taking the output capacity to 750 + 50 sheets so it can run largely unattended.

Duplex:

Included on "D" models. Duplex and envelope feeder units are optional. With the duplexer and driver assistance the LJ4300 can print booklets.

Processor:

The 4300 has a 350MHz RISC processor.

Memory:

The LJ4300 has 64MB in the base model expandable to 416MB. The "bundle" models (n, dtn etc) have 80MB. There are 4 x 100 pin DIMM slots. Slots 3 and 4 are empty as shipped. The printer uses Memory Enhancement technology (HP MEt) to reduce the amount of memory needed to rasterise pages.

Interface:

IEEE 1284 Parallel. There are 2 x EIO slots

Network:

A Jetdirect card is provided in one on "n" models. (The other can be used for a disk). Microsoft Windows 98, Me, NT4, 2000, XP. Apple Mac OS 8.6 to 9.x OS X. Unix, Linux etc.

HP PCL5e, HP PCL6, HP-GL/2 and HP PostScript 3 Emulation. Automatic language switching

Power Consumption:

25 watts in powersave, 27 watts in standby. 685 watts printing. Instant on fuser giving a first page out in less than 8.5 seconds

All in one toner-developer-drum cartridge. . One of the selling points for the 4300 is the 18,000 page capacity from it's high capacity cartridge Q1339A. For comparrison the Q1338A cartridge for the LJ 4200 has a yield of just 12,000 pages.

Q1339X is often used as a code for an extended life toner for the LJ4300, LJ4250, LJ4300, LJ4345, LJ4350 and M4345 - this doesn't seem to be an official HP code, it is used by some compatible makers and refurbishers

Contains HP Genuine Parts - 220V Fuser Unit, separation rollers, transfer roller, paper feed rollers, pickup roller. Approx life of kit 200,000 pages

It is often preferable to buy the maintenance kit rather than just a fuser as after 200,000 pages the rollers will also be close to giving misfeeds. Paper feed repair kits are also available - as are individual rollers and pads.

Refurbished Maintenance Kits are also sometimes available. These comprise a refurbished fuser and new rollers. As usual with refurbished fusers they can save money and reduce the environmental impact of printer use. However refurbished products do sometimes prove more difficult to use so they may not be appropriate where a printer has to be put back in service immediately or fuser replacement is an unfamiliar job.

Service:

Resetting the maintenance-kit counter (LJ 4200/4300)

The Select Button has a tick-mark.

The Up Arrow button has a black triangular arrow pointing upward.

  • Turn the printer power off.
  • Hold down the SELECT button, and then turn on the printer power. Continue holding down Select until all three printer control-panel lights flash once and then remain on. This might take up to 10 seconds.
  • Use the UP ARROW button to scroll to NEW MAINTENANCE KIT.
  • Press Select to reset the maintenance-kit counter.

HP's Service Manual cautions that this reset procedure should not be used to clear the message temporarily. If you do clear the message then remember what long-lived items have not been changed yet

HP's Service Manual gives anticipated lives for long-lasting parts:

  • Fuser life for the 4200 and 4300 is 200,000 pages. The transfer roller is expected to have the same life.
  • The tray 1 Pickup roller has an expected life of 100,000 pages. The tray 1 separation pad life is given as 200,000 pages.
  • The Tray 2 Pickup roller has a life of 225,000 pages. The Feed roller has a life of 225,000 pages.
  • The pickup solenoids are given a life of just 200,000 pages in the service manual. In practice the solenoids often outlive the rollers several times.
  • The Cooling fans are all rated for 40,000 hour, about 5 years of constant on service. Ten years or more of working 9 to 5 office hours.
