HP Laserjet 4L

The 4L and 4ML were aimed at low cost personal use. They use the same Canon PX engine as the LaserJet 4P but saves some money by having no LCD control panel.

• LaserJet 4L - C2003A - PX Engine 300 dpi
• LaserJet 4ML - C2015A -PX version with Apple LocalTalk and PostScript level 2.

Laser printers were not cheap items in the 1980s and where office computer were used they had either

• daisy wheel printers which produced nice looking alpha-numeric type but were slow and inflexible
• dot matrix printer which were somewhat faster and more flexible but usually produced somewhat crude looking type.

There would clearly be a market for low cost laser printers and the 4L was an early attempt to target this. It was introduced in 1993 and has to be regarded as obsolete although it's defects are just that it's slow and can't handle photos. Parts can only be recovered from old machines and we don't currently list any.

The 4L's successor was the 5L and 6L, followed by the 1100. These machines were targeted at offices which were replacing typewriters.

Control:

A single button and a couple of indicator lights. See the "4P" for the model with an LCD control panel.

Print Resolution:

Print resolution maximum 600x600 dpi with REt and microfine toner

Paper Handling:

100 sheets in multifunction tray. 250 sheets in the built in cassette under the printer body

Tray 1:100 sheets in multifunction tray

Tray 2:250 sheets in the built in cassette under the printer body

Face Down:

Default output to a face-down tray on top of the printer.

No auto-duplex option

PCL 5 and HP-GL/2. ML model has Adobe PostScript level 2. Enhanced PCL 5. Can be upgraded to PostScript by insertion of a SIMM.

An all-in-one toner, developer and drum cartridge makes the printers easy to maintain.
