HP Laserjet 5200

The HP LaserJet 5200 is a monochrome laser printer with A3 / tabloid paper handling and 1200 dpi resolution to give reasonable photographic reproduction.

The LJ 5200 design is based on that of the LJ 5100 which had similar capabilities. The new design is a complete overhaul of the parts which has made the printer faster. There's a lot more memory as well, which helps these printers with photographic data.

A typical use is for printing spreadsheets where the ordinary A4 paper format is too cramped. Other uses are engineering diagrams and maps. A3 printers are also handy for things like newsletters where A3 folded gives a neat four sides of A4. In all these applications colour might be preferable but an A3 inkjet is much more expensive to run, and an A3 colour laserprinter much more expensive to buy and run.

Control:

The printer has a 2 line LCD display and fairly intuitive set of buttons for control. There is also an embedded print-server and support for Web Jetadmin.

Duty Cycle:

is cited as 65,000 pages per month. It's unlikely that any site would use a printer in this class so heavily but it is robust.

35 pages per minute A4 output. 18 pages per minute A3. First page out in less than 10 seconds.

1200x1200 dpi With FastRes 1200 and ProRes 1200.

Paper Handling:

A3 and tabloid paper handling. An automatic duplexer is available and is shipped with the "DTN" model.

Tray 1:is a fold-down multifunction tray handling 3x5 to 12.28 x 18.5 inch paper (76.2x127 to 312x470 mm. Weight range 60 to 199gsm

Tray 2:slides into the printer base and handles upt to 250 sheets in standard sizes up to A3 and tabloid.

Optional Tray 3:Fits under the printer and provides a further 500 sheet capacity in sizes up to A3 and tabloid. Paper ranges available through trays 2 and 3 include all the common office types, Plain, prepunched, bond, recycled, rough, light, vellum, transparencies, card and envelopes. in weights from 60 to 120 gsm.

Maximum of 512MB. The 5200 ships with 48MB, The tn model has 64MB and the 5200dtn has 128MB as shipped. There is a single 100 pin DDR DIMM slot and it is occupied on the "dtn" model. Flash Memory slots are provided as two CF slots for extra fonts, barcodes, secure print and PDF direct.

Interface:

The base model 5200 has USB 2.0 Hi-Speed and parallel ports with an open EIO slot. The TN and DTN models have the USB and parallel ports and the open EIO slot together with an embedded JetDirect server.

HP PCL 5e, PCL6, HP PostScript level 3 emulation. The PostScript capability gives compatability with most operating systems including Unix and Linux. Support is specifically mentioned for Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, Netware and Appletalk.

with MS-Windows 2000, XP, Netware, Unix, Linux, Apple etc using PostScript.

Fuser:

The fuser in a laser printer adheres toner powder to the paper using a combination of heat and pressure. The fuser relies on non-stick surfaces which will become exhausted after some time. The materials used in the fuser break down with constant wear from the paper and with heating and cooling cycles.

RM1-2546-000CN - Separation pad assembly - For Tray 2 - Includes pad holder and separation pad (Used in the LJ 5200)
