LaserJet 8000 and Canon WX Engine: Overview

The HP Laserjet 5Si, 8000, 8100 and 8150 and their "Mopier" and MFP variants are all based on the Canon "WX" Engine. Canon naturally marketed a version of the engine themselves and it was also sold as the Lexmark Optra N, DEC LN24, and QMS 2425.

The printer was sufficiently fast that it could work as a digital copier hence HP's (rather ineligant) coining of the word "Mopier". Print quality is good enough for reports and newsletters but the true resolution is 600x600dpi enhanced to "Fastres 1200" on some models. This is not quite sufficient for photographs and fine line diagrams where the LaserJet 5000 would be preferable.

The WX was even developed into an A3 colour machine marketed as the Color Laserjet 8500 and 8550.

The 5Si, 8000 and Lexmark Optra N printers use an all-in one catridge with toner, developer charge roller and drum all built in. The basic cartridge is sometimes said to have a life of 17,000 pages, other sources say 15,000 pages.

The 5Si was made between 1996 and 1998. The 5Si is simply a big, fast printer. The machine was also produced with a scanner making it a multi-function copier; one of HPs first challenges to the established copier industry.  The 5Si's  capabilities were limited by a 40MHz processor. Copying and photographic capabilities were limited by a 600 dpi resolution and 120 level grey scale.

Cartridge is C3909A with 15,000 page yield and C3909X with 22,000 page yield.  The 200 Volt fuser is  RG5-4448 and the Maintenance Kit C3972-67903. The fuser and maintenance kit no longer seem to be available new from HP. Shopping Basket

The Laserjet 8000 range took the 5Si's place for a short time in 1998 1999. It uses the same engine but improved electronics with a 133MHz processor and 100 pin SDRAM memory. The LJ 8000 also has 1200 dpi FastRes and a 220 level grey scales. The control panel was also improved resembling that introduced on the LaserJet 4000

Cartridge, Fuser and Maintenance Kit are as for the 5Si Shopping Basket . The fuser and maintenance kit no longer seem to be available new from HP.

The HP LaserJet 8100 and 8150 are based on a speeded up 32 page per minute version of the WX engine. Again they produce FastRes 1200 but not true 1200dpi.

The HP LaserJet 8100 introduced in 1998 has a 166Mhz Processor and a rated duty cycle of 130,000 pages

The 8150 was introduced in 2001 has a 250mhz processor and a duty cycle to 150,000 pages per month. Production of the HP 8150 ceased in 2002, bringing the "WX" series to an end.

The 8100 and 8150 use the same C4182X toner cartridge with a capacity of 20,000 pages. It is a slightly redesigned version of that used in the 5Si and 8000 models.  The fuser is an RG5-6533 and the maintenance kit is C3915A. The maintenance interval is 350,000 pages. Both the fuser and maintenance kit are still available as at January 2010. There are also Nupro equivalent fusers for these machines. Shopping Basket

The duplexers and options for the 8100 and 8150 are backward compatible to earlier models but not vice-versa. Non of the options are likely to be available new but may be refurbished.

Color LaserJet 8500 and 8550

Curiously the HP Color LaserJet 8500 (introduced 1998) and 8550 (April 2000) machines are based on a re-engineered version of the chassis. The machine uses a carousel mounted above the print path and there are common components.

Cartridges are Black C4149A, Cyan C4150, Magenta C4151A and Yellow C4152A.
There is a drum kit R94-3001-410CN / C4153A  and a transfer Belt R95-3014-000CN / C4154A.

The 220 Volt fuser is C4156A
