HP Laserjet P1000

A group of A4 / US letter mono laser printers with speeds from 15 pages per minute up using a very small footprint engine. The new series was introduced in November 2007 with the P1005 / P1006 and P1505 models. The primary aim is to deliver laser printer performance at low cost. As often happens in the low cost printer market there are lots of models that are all minor variations on a theme.

The P1002, P1003, P1004 are cut-down. The P1009 has a priority feed slot. The service manual suggests other new models will be introduced, the P1000, P1006, P1007, and P1008.

All machines have a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port.

The printers are based on a Canon engine rated for around 17ppm and 600dpi.

P1005, CB410A, 15 ppm, Host based -has a 266MHz processor but just 2MB RAM. Foldable tray for 150 sheets. Cartridge CB435A.

P1006, CB411A, 17ppm, Host based -has a 266MHz processor with 8MB RAM. Foldable tray for 150 sheets. Cartridge CB435A.

P1008, CC366A

P1505N, 24ppm, 10 sheet priority slot. Host based -has a 266MHz processor 8MB RAM. 250 sheet tray.

M1522N, 24ppm, 10 sheet priority slot 250 sheet tray and network.

M1522NF, 24ppm, 10 sheet priority slot 250 sheet tray and network.

The press release in late 2007 suggests the P1005 is aimed at Asian markets and the P1006 more globally but both are sold in the UK.

The P1005 and P1006 replace the LJ1020 and the P1505 replaces the LJ1022.

HP are presumably running out of 4-digit product names because there is a danger that the "P1000 series" will be confused with the PhotoSmart P1000 inkjet printer (C7624A). Competing machines are the Lexmark E120 and Dell 1110.

Control:

Buttons and lights. The lights signal primary and secondary error codes given in the service manual.

Duty Cycle:

Maximum monthly duty cycle is 5,000 pages. Recommended monthly print volume is 250-1500 pages paper month. The small print-cartridges would be a limitation on heavier use.

P1005 15 ppm

P1006 17ppm

First page in less than 8.5 seconds from power save mode

Scanner Abilities:

Theses printers are not directly used as multifunction machines. The M1522 is a multifunction printer based on the rather faster P1505.

Up to 600x600 dpi engine resolution enhanced to 1200dpi using HP FastRes 1200.

Paper Handling:

A4 paper path. Most printers in this series have some kind of input tray but the kind varies. The P1002, P1003, P1004 and P1005 have a fold able main tray Some models have a priority slot.

Priority Tray:Priority feed slot for letterhead, envelopes, labels, transparencies, custom-sized media, postcards, and heavy paper.

Main Tray: Main tray for letterhead, envelopes, labels, transparencies,custom-sized media, postcards, and heavy paper.

Tray 3: Not available

Face Down:

A 125-sheet top output bin.

Duplex:

There is no auto-duplex option but manual two sided printing is supported in the print-driver and HP have a guidance sheet on how to do it.

Processor:

P1005 and P1006 266 MHz processor

Memory:

P1005 2MB RAM

P1006 8MB RAM

Interface:

Hi-Speed 2.0 USB port.

Network:

If network printing is required all models can (apparently) work with an external USB print server. Note that the very low cost host based printers like the P1006 are likely to create a lot of network traffic for comparatively simple pages.

A built-in internal print server for connecting to a 10/100Base-T network is available on the HP LaserJet P1500 network models. This includes an embedded web server to configure the printer and view status information.

System Compatability:

Windows® 2000, XP Home, XP® Professional, XP Professional x64; Windows Server 2003 (32/64 bit);

Certified for Windows Vista®; Mac OS X v10.3, v10.4 and v10.5

Power:

110 to 127 V (±10 percent), 60 Hz (±2 Hz), 7 amp

220 to 240 V (±10 percent), 50 Hz (±2 Hz), 4.0 amp

Power Consumption:

The device automatically conserves electricity by substantially reducing power consumption when it is not printing.

Acoustic Noise:

Designed for desktop use and as with most laser printers it is not very noisy in use. These printers calim to be inaudible in standby - older printers often have a fan running.
