HP Laserjet P2035 Printer

The P2035 is a small but well-featured A4 / US letter mono printer aimed at personal and small office use. It was introduced in 2008 and is still in the Autumn 2013 catalog. It has been one of HP's all-time best sellers. It is small enough to fit neatly on a desk and fast enough for use in customer-facing work.

The printer features:

  • Multipurpose tray handling letterhead, envelopes or up to 50 pages of plain paper. the printer can handle index cards and prescription forms.
  • 250 sheet built in main tray. 150 sheet output bin to handle long print jobs.
  • Print cartridge with a capacity of 2300 pages.
  • Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port for simplicity, optional parallel port for backwards compatability.
  • Ethernet network built in on the P2035n.
  • 266MHz Processor and 16MB memory, with an efficient driver the printer should cope with complex documents.
  • Security device slot to secure the printer to a desk.

HP presumably intended additional models - they call it the P2030 series but there just seem to be the P2035 (CE461A) and P2035n (CE462A).

The P2035 uses the same engine as the P2055 which has a slightly faster speed of 35ppm and a better feature set including:

  • A built in duplex model.
  • An LCD control panel.
  • A larger cartridge rated for 6,500 pages
  • A larger 64MB memory extendable to 320MB
  • Gigabit networking.
  • Double the duty cycle - 50,000 pages per month.

Both machines were launched in November 2008 and the fact that they are still in the 2013 catalog is a testament to their success.

These are fairly straight forward mono printers and generally regarded as reliable. The pickup rollers are easily replaced. Replacing the fuser is rather unfortunate - it means removing the casing. HP have never provided these fusers particularly cheaply but have cut the sales price of the printer so repair might have to be justified on environmental rather than being a clear-cut decision on the basis of cost.

These printers resemble the 1160/1320 and P2014 P2015 series which were very popular personal and small office printers in their time so presumably these machines inherited that success.

As said, the P2035 is still in the catalog in 2013. However its intended successor seems to be the Laserjet Pro 400 M401 and for a machine with Multifunction capabilities the M425 MFP. These newer designs have the black styling that seems expected now and are fractionally faster at 33 pages per minute - they are rather more expensive as well.

Control:

Controls on the P2035 are just 2-buttons and 6 LEDs. For the most part people will be able to use the computer driver to identify what the printer is doing. One problem with not having a contol panel can be initial network setup. Once the network connection is setup The P2035n has an HP Embedded web-server that can be used for administration.

For a model with an LCD control panel see the P2055 series.

Duty Cycle:

HP give a figure for "duty cycle" which helps suggest the build-quality Up to 25,000 pages per month. Recommended monthly page volume 500 to 2500 pages.

HP give their standard warning on duty cycle:

"Duty cycle is defined as the maximum number of pages per month of imaged output. This value provides a comparison of product robustness in relation to other HP LaserJet or HP Color LaserJet devices, and enables appropriate deployment of printers and MFPs to satisfy the demands of connected individuals or groups."

Lexmark give a duty-cycle and say its a maximum one-time useage. We think the primary use for duty-cycle is probably in arguments about warranty and over-use.

A limit on printer use is the lifetime and cost of the cartridges. Original HP P2035 cartridges (CE505A) cost about £52 and have an ISO standard yield of 2,300 pages giving a running cost of just under 2.3p per page. If you are using a cartridge per month or more it would be sensible to look at printers that are more expensive to buy but have lower running costs.

Print speed up to 30 pages per minute.

First page out as quickly as 8.0 seconds using instant-on technology.

The exact print speed will depend on both the controlling system and document complexity. As usual a laser-printer should achieve something close to the rated speeds when handling ordinary office documents but may slow down when dealing with complex graphics.

UP to 600 x 600 dpi enhanced to 1200dpi effective output with HP FastRes 1200.

Network Protocols:

Network versions support protocols including the following:

Supports the TCP/IP network protocol; the most widely used and accepted networking protocol. Many networking services utilize this protocol. This product also supports IPv4 and IPv6.

Port 9100 (Direct Mode) Printing service

Line printer daemon (LPD) Printing service

SLP (Service Location Protocol) Device Discovery Protocol, used to help find and configure network devices. Used primarily by Microsoft-based software programs.

mDNS (multicast Domain Name Service - also known as Device Discovery Protocol, Rendezvous or Bonjour). Used to help find and configure network devices. Used primarily by Apple Macintosh-based software programs.

HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol) Allows Web browsers to communicate with embedded Web server.

SNMP (simple network management protocol) Used by network programs for product management. SNMP V1, V2, and standard MIB-II (Management Information Base) objects are supported.

DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol) For Automatic IP address assignment. DHCP server provides the product with an IP address. Generally requires no user intervention for product to obtain IP address from a DHCP server.

BOOTP (bootstrap protocol) For Automatic IP address assignment. BOOTP server provides the product with an IP address. Requires administrator to input the product MAC hardware address on BOOTP server in order for product to obtain an IP address from that server.

Auto IP For Automatic IP address assignment. If neither a DHCP server nor a BOOTP server is present, this service allows the product to generate a unique IP address.

110 to 127 V (± 10 percent); 60 Hz (± 2 Hz)

220 to 240 V (± 10 percent); 50 Hz (± 2 Hz)

Power Consumption:

HP reckon the instant-on fuser saves as much as 50% of the energy consumption compared with a traditional printer.

  • Power consumption (active) 550 watts
  • Power consumption (powersave), 7 watts
  • Power Consumption (Standby), 7 watts
  • Power consumption(off) 0.4 watts.

Power Consumption Footnote: Power numbers are the highest values measured using all standard voltages.

Typical Electricity Consumption (TEC): 1.949 kWh/week

Interestingly it says in the plain feature list "Energy Star certified: No"

Dimension:

A fairly small machine aimed at space saving design but not entirely in the "small footprint" class.

Fuser:

The fuser in a laser printer adheres the toner powder to the page using a combination of heat and pressure. The fuser in the HP P2035 uses a fast-heating ceramic bar and a foil.

RM1-6406-000CN Fusing Assembly - Bonds toner to paper with heat - For 220-240VAC (+/- 10%) operation. Used in P2035, P2035n P2055d, P2055dn, P2055x

RM1-6405-000CN Fusing Assembly - Bonds toner to paper with heat - For 110-127VAC (+/- 10%) operation. Used in P2035, P2035n P2055d, P2055dn, P2055x

The fuser in the P2055 (and P2035) is not regarded as user changeable. There are five pages of instructions in the service manual. Briefly, you have to remove the right and left covers, rear cover, rear door and the duplex assembly (on the P2055). Six connectors then have to be released and the wire harness removed from its guide. Three more connectors can then be released and the ground connector unscrewed. Three gears then need to be unlatched from their tabs. The three screws holding the fuser then needs removing. Its an easy enough job for an engineer - and the service manual has pictures.

Because the fuser is not user changeable HP do not make an "official" maintenance kit available for these printers. There is nothing to stop retailers providing kits.
