Consumables:

As usual with HP printers all-in-one cartridges are used. There are two cartridges available. The Q7551A is cheap to buy and has a 6,500 page life. The Q7551X is less expensive to use and has a 13,000 page life, (Both at 5% cover to ISO/IEC 19752).

HP Black cartridge. Yield 13,000 pages at 5% cover - Q7551X

Fuser:

The fuser in a laser printer bonds toner to the paper using a combination of heat and pressure. The fuser must be non-stick to the page and to toner but over time it loses this property and has to be replaced.

RM1-3740- Fuser 110V for LaserJet M3027, M3035 and P3005 series. - RM1-3740-030CN

In February 2010 HP are saying RM1-3741 is no longer supplied and to order RM1-3761-000CN. However distributors didn't all recognise that code.

Maintenance Kit:

There doesn't seem to be an "official" HP maintenance kit for the P3005.

A maintenance kit provides both a fuser and a set of rollers. Rollers have a long life but do wear out, frequently at around the same time as the fuser. Maintenance technicians often replace both at the same time. Unfortunately HP don't seem to be providing one for this printer. In February 2010 HP partsurfer gives several possible codes with cryptic entries but the UK distributors don't recognise them. Q7812-67902, Q7812-69056 and 5851-4021 are possible codes.

Several vendors on the web are listing maintenance kits for the printer but under their own part codes. They may or may not be using genuine HP parts.

If you order a maintenance kit we will supply a fuser and a paper feed repair kit. We do use HP (or Canon) parts.

Electronics:

Electronic components do not usually fail - suspect contacts, sensors and plug seating before suspecting a logic board. Some of the electronic parts are rather expensive but may be worth it if they restore the printer to life.

The LaserJet P3005 has a known problem with the formatter board giving error "49.ff04". More here. There is an HP Service Advisory on the issue (c01954489) but it is said to be for authorized repairers only. There is a substantial amount on the issue on fixyourownprinter.com.
