HP CB524A for HP P4014 and M601 Series Printers.

top-right-photoCB524A / CE399A Envelope Feeder

The HP CB524A part is the HP Laserjet 75-sheet Envelope Feeder for use with the HP Laserjet P4014 and P4015 series printers. This holds up to 75 envelopes enabling increased efficiency in the workgroup, saving valuable time and labour.

CB524A has been replaced by CE399A which was introduced for the LJ-M601 but is backward compatible with the P4014 series. The newer product is also fractionally cheaper - perhaps because distributors are actively updating their price lists.

Q2438A was the equivalent used in the LJ-4200 series and Q2438B used for the LJ-4300. Mechanical differences are not great but they aren't compatible. Note that CB524A is not believed forward compatible; it will not work in an LJ-M601.

The envelope feeder plugs into the front of the printer just above the MP tray (tray-1). A couple of blanking plates are removed to secure it in place. Envelopes load under a weighted plate within the feeder and are taken off the stack from the bottom one at a time directly into the registration station. Heavier stock may feed more reliably to the face-up tray on the rear of the printer than to the face-down tray. The duplexer should not be used and the print-driver may disable it. Printers like the P4014 are often used specifically as mailroom equipment.

Warranty:New products are supplied with one year return to base warranty. Refurbished units are normally supplied with 90 day warranty although some vendors might give longer.

HP Information

In June 2015 HP Partsurfer says:

CE399-67901   75-sheet envelope feeder assembly Part CB524-67901 is no longer supplied. Please order the replacement, CE399-67901

Partsurfer says CE399A fits the M601 series (M601, M602, M603 variants) and the M4559F MFP. It is backward compatible as well. Partsurfer CB524A was made for the P4014 series and is probably not forward compatible. Some vendors on eBay say CB424A works with the M4555

Icecat says this envelope feeder has both a short public code CB524A and two GTINs (EAN/UPC)8835852799510, 0883585279951. It showed 38778 product views on this item in 2013 and this climbed to 46348 in June 2015.

CB524A / CE399A Envelope Feeder

CB524A is also known as CB524-67901 (which seems to be the brown-box number).   Some accessories (such as the 500 sheet feeder tray) have some strange part number on them but that doesn't seem to be the case with the envelope feeder.

If the envelope feeder fails to work correctly the first step is usually to unplug it and test whether things work properly from the MP tray which very largely uses the same feed path.

Little has been found online about faults in June 2015. There are probably not great numbers of envelope feeders out there and given their price the usual response to a fault is probably replacement rather then repair.

As might be expected there are usually some CB524A for sale on eBay at prices between £100 through £200. Small offices may pick up a bargain. Professional users will probably want the reliability of new kit.

Prices noted are for a new item, one off, without tax. The list is as encountered. We haven't bothered with currency conversion - half of our readers are outside the UK and are more interested in dollar prices.

Price research suggests a considerable variation between 242 and 356 dollars in Web pricing for new product and sometimes not much discount for a "refurb" - (its a word used several ways). Over two years there was a great measure of stability. A confounding point might be that HP reduced prices a bit when they introduced CE399A and some vendors will be equating the two (as we largely do).

On both occasions there were many pages with no stock or basket in this list. Nor did we find any helpful blogs or engineering tips on the part. There are a couple of irrelevant pages . All the rest in the list were merely vendors giving no more information than found in the HP brochure.

Supply Situation

Envelope feeders are one of those things most offices would quite like and some places like postrooms simply must have. Sometimes it will be a deal breaker - HP, Lexmark Canon and a few specialists are competing on having this sort of accessory available; they make them, but the price is quite high. Presumably its a matter of market balance; if they priced them at £80 then more people would buy them but not in numbers to boost factory scale efficiencies. The envelope feeder is a bit specialist and quite a chunky bit of kit.

Part CB524A did not seem to be listed by distributors in 2013, and got one mention in 2015. CE399A gets several mentions in distribution lists in 2015 and there are a few in stock. Demand is not very high but persistent.

In 2015 we can supply this part when required. We will generally equate retail and brown box as there is little practical difference in the item supplied and a substantial saving to the customer.

We can also probably source the item as "refurbished" if required - that will be a distinct product code.
