HP Designjet T120 Printer.

The HP Designjet T120 is a 24 inch printer/plotter with a 4-ink system, roll feed and sheet feed . Launched in 2012 it is aimed at engineering and design professionals working individually and in small teams.

The T120 is similar to the T520 - indeed the user manual is the same. Differences are:

• The T520 supports print resolution of up to 2400 × 1200 dpi when using the best print quality option, maximum detail option and photo paper.
• The T520 is available in 24 inch and 36 inch versions where larger A0 prints are required.
• The T520 supports the HP-GL/2 and HP RTL driver for Windows
• The T120 provides the PCL3GUI raster driver for Windows and the PCL3GUI raster driver for Mac OS X
• The T520 models come with the printer stand. The T120 does not come with the stand but it can be purchased as an accessory, Part number B3Q35A (See the Catalog)

The printers come with one roll spindle appropriate to their length. Other spindles can be purchased as accessories - many sites find it convenient to have a set of spindles in order to change paper rapidly.

HP say the US street-price for the T120 is $1,201. In January 2014 we are seeing an actual UK street price for the base (non Postscript) model of about £698

The printer can generate email notifications, the email server is configured via the Embedded Web Server.

HP are very much pushing Web connection - it allows them to offer value added "cloud" services.

You can enable Web Services when setting up the printer.

Security Features:

Firewall features provide network-layer security on both IPv4 and IPv6 networks. The firewall provides simple control of IP addresses that are allowed access.

Firewall settings are covered in the user guide. It is possible to lock yourself out of the firewall configuration. To reset the firewall, restore the default network settings. Press the tool icon then Connectivity Restore network defaults.

Note: HP say : "When you have set up Web Services, the printer is in unlock mode. In unlock mode, anyone who knows your printer's email address can print to your printer by just sending a file to it. Although HP provides a spam filtering service, you should be careful about giving out your printer's email address, as everything sent to that address may be printed on your printer."

Duty Cycle:

We haven't come across any specific recommendations from HP on usage expectations. Obviously a printer with 29ml cartridges will not be the most economical to run compared with the larger machines in HP's Designjet lineup. We would say this printer is intended for general professional use in workgroups of up to three people.

Options are: Best, Normal and Fast.

If you select Fast, you can also select Economode, which uses a lower rendering resolution and consumes less ink. It therefore increases printing speed even further, but reduces print quality.
