HP Designjet Z3200 Printer.

The HP Designjet Z3200 series are 24 inch and 44 inch printer/plotters with roll feed. Launched in 2008 it is aimed at professional photographers, digital fine artists, print service providers, graphic designers, and pre-press professionals. A very distinctive feature is the use of 12 inks - the colour gamut will strongly suit photographers - the Z-series aren't so appropriate for architectural and engineering uses. Each model is available with a PostScript option.

HP say the US street-price for the Z3200ps is $4,605. In January 2014 we are seeing an actual UK street price for the Postscript model of about £2600.

The Designjet Z3200 is successor to the Z3100 but introduces a new Chromatic Red - HP cartridge 73.

The front panel settings are accessed using the direct access keys and various other keys which perform different operations

The Embedded Web Server enables you to manage your printer remotely using an ordinary Web browser running on any computer.

From time to time firmware updates will be available from Hewlett-Packard. These updates increase the printer's functionality and enhance its features.

Firmware updates can be downloaded from the Internet and installed in your printer

Security Features:

Note: HP say : "When you have set up Web Services, the printer is in unlock mode. In unlock mode, anyone who knows your printer's email address can print to your printer by just sending a file to it. Although HP provides a spam filtering service, you should be careful about giving out your printer's email address, as everything sent to that address may be printed on your printer."

Duty Cycle:

We haven't come across any specific recommendations from HP on usage expectations. Obviously a printer with 130ml cartridges will be more economical to run compared with the smaller machines in HP's Designjet lineup. We would say this printer is intended for professional photographers, digital fine artists, print service providers, graphic designers, and pre-press professionals.

Print Speed:

Options are: Best, Normal and Fast.

Normal: 3.8 mpp on D/A1 or up to 92.43 ft2/hr (color image on coated paper)

Best: 12.4 mpp on D/A1 or up to 27.76 ft2/hr (color image on glossy paper)

If you select Fast, you can also select Economode, which uses a lower rendering resolution and consumes less ink. It therefore increases printing speed even further, but reduces print quality.

Print Resolution:

Up to 2400 x 1200 optimized dpi

Print resolution is meaningful with laser and four or five ink inkjet printers where the intercalation and merging of tiny dots creates the perceived print quality. With an 8 or 12 ink printer the size and positioning of ink-dots is not nearly so meaningful, the colour-space opened up by the number of inks is more important.
