HP Designjet Z5400 Printer.

The HP Designjet Z5400 is a 44" inch printer with a 12-ink system and two automatic roll feeds. Launched in 2013 it is aimed at professional photography and graphic designers with high volume output.

Applications for this printer are: Line drawings, Renderings, Maps, Graphics design, Office Graphics, Posters, Photos, Digital fine art, Banners, Exhibition, event graphics, Light box film, Point of sale/display.

HP say the US street-price for the Z5400ps is $7,095.   We were unable to find a UK street price online in January 2014 - vendors seem limited to HP's large form factor specialists - presumably on the grounds you need specialist support.

HP Colour inkjet. Ink types 70 130-ml and 772 300-ml. Pigment-based.

Control:

Touch-sensitive front panel in color, with an intuitive graphical user interface. The front panel has a large central area to display dynamic information and icons. On the left and right sides you can see up to six fixed icons at different times.

The Embedded Web Server enables you to manage your printer remotely using an ordinary Web browser running on any computer.

Connecting the printer to the Internet provides:

• Automatic firmware updates
• Use HP ePrint to print by email

• Save your files online in the cloud
• Access files saved to the cloud using your online print history.

The printer can generate email notifications, the email server is configured via the Embedded Web Server.

HP are very much pushing Web connection - it allows them to offer value added "cloud" services.

You can enable Web Services when setting up the printer.

Security Features:

Note: HP say : "When you have set up Web Services, the printer is in unlock mode. In unlock mode, anyone who knows your printer's email address can print to your printer by just sending a file to it. Although HP provides a spam filtering service, you should be careful about giving out your printer's email address, as everything sent to that address may be printed on your printer."

Duty Cycle:

We haven't come across any specific recommendations from HP on usage expectations. Obviously a printer with 130ml cartridges will be more economical to run compared with the smaller machines in HP's Designjet lineup. We would say this printer is intended for professional photography and graphic designers with high volume output.

Print Speed:

Options are: Best, Normal and Fast.

If you select Fast, you can also select Economode, which uses a lower rendering resolution and consumes less ink. It therefore increases printing speed even further, but reduces print quality.
