HP F2G74A Envelope Feeder

For Laserjet M604, M605, M606 Series Printers

face-on-photoface-on-phototower

An envelope feeder holds a stock of envelopes ready for use. An alternative way to do the same thing is to use the printer's MultiPurpose tray (MP tray-1) but it will only hold about 10 envelopes. The envelope feeder will hold around 75. The feeder fits just above the MP tray so that it has a fairly straight path into the print station - envelopes don't always feed well from the cassettes below. Heavy envelopes may need to go to the rear drop-down tray.

Ideally the envelope feeder fits into an automatic production routine so that correspondence paper letterhead and continuation pages are pulled from trays 2 and 3 whilst the envelope feeder provides the envelope.

What HP Say

Increase flexibility by providing additional input capacity and reduce printer interaction by eliminating manual envelope loading with the HP LaserJet Envelope Feeders.

The aesthetics of printers are usually rather negative. An envelope feeder may add intrigue but is not a thing of great beauty. It is likely to be ergonomically more satisfactory.

The F2G74A is similar to the CE399A (for the M601 series) and the CB524A (for the P4014 series) but older devices are not forward compatible.

The envelope feeder is a motorized feed unit pushing material into the registration station. It is powered and controlled from an expansion port on the right hand side just next to the MP tray.

Installation

With the MP tray open there is a blanking-plate that unclips. The envelope feeder fits in the space.

Computers that are to use the accessory will need it configuring in the driver.

As well as the GTIN 0888182490136.

Icecat gives the EAN/UPC code 0888182490136. In June 2015, oddly labelling it as "HP LaserJet 75" - perils of big databases.

The Web tends to be dominated by two kinds of information for this sort of product: the manufacturer themselves and then list-fed catalogue sites deriving their information either from "P&A" lists provided by distributors (Ingram and Techhdata being amongst the biggest) or from Icecat. This tends to cause a great sameness in everything but price.   It is curious how prices vary because non of the vedors is doing anything other than sending an instruction upstream for HP to ship a box.

A google Query on F2G74A in June 2015 gave About 2,180 results (0.27 seconds) with the first in organic search being as follows:

www8.hp.com/emea_africa no price, www.cdw.com $289.99, icecat.biz/en, provantage.com $226.10, www.amazon.com vendor antonline (list $307.79) $263.32, www.hardware.com $254.82, cplonline.com.au $345.00, techbuy.com.au $358.85, shopbot.com.au price comparison site, www.bechtle.nl €265.00 excl. VAT, zones.com $311.99, directdial.com $283, hpdecin.cz, shopblt.com $251.71, https://www.bestbuybusiness.com $253.99, www.redcorp.com € 238.82 (Excl. VAT) US feed?, bechtle.co.uk £180.80 ex vat.

US and Australian vendors getting top billing here probably by being first to list. They say nothing technical or interesting about the product - it's just list driven stuff offering things for sale. There isn't an enormous price range here; although buyers might save $60 by just oening a couple of web pages!

Using the envelope feeder doesn't inherently require any other accessory. If it's a shared printer then the 5-bin mailbox will keep up to 6 print jobs together - correspondence and envelope directed to the right bin - which may prove handy but exact performance will depend on your software.

Supply Situation

In these days of list drive websites it is no surprise that Google finds over 2,000 results for a relatively obscure product in June 2015. there seem to be some envelope feeders in distribution as well.

The envelope feeder is the sort of thing that people buy for the time and trouble it saves once they have experience of it.

The only accessories that have sold in significant numbers in the past are the duplexer and the extra feeder cassette trays. Other items are not usually available direct from distributors but have to be ordered in from HP as wanted.

The sales bar at the right reflect today’s situation regarding the envelope feeder.
