Big cartridges giving low cost print

CF287X 18,000 page cartridge costs about £160+ - more than some printers. It prints for 1p per page which is good. (Not matching the M605 0.7p though.)

HP LaserJet Enterprise M506 Printer.

The HP LaserJet Enterprise M506 models are are mono laser printers giving economical running at a fairly low purchase cost. Workplace information such as delivery notes, invoices and payroll and all sorts of other office documentation need low running costs and reliability much more than they need colour.   The M506 is primarily intended for "workgroup" use but will find a role as a desktop printer where reliability is high up the agenda and in roles like forms printing, labelling and despatch. It's cartridges and economy fall just a bit short of those given by the M604, M605, M606 series but it is significantly smaller and more desk-friendly.

Perhaps it would help to put this printer in context against HP's other offerings

Advantages of the M605 series:

  • even bigger cartridges (10.5k & 25k) giving HP's lowest running cost at 0.7p per page.
  • duty cycle calimed as 225,000 pages per month (M606 275,000)
  • easily changed fuser in a maintenance kit
  • output options such as the stapler stacker

Advantages of the M401 or M402

  • cheaper to buy, but not to run

Disadvantage of the M402

  • running cost
  • not so expandable.
  • fewer security options

The M506 is pitched as the replacement for HP's P3015 model, which launched in 2009 and has been a long-lived top seller. The new machine has the following advantages:

  • Big 9,000 or 18,000 page cartridge rating (against 6k and 12.5k for the old P3015)
  • The new printer is a bit faster at 45ppm but where the P3015 slowed to half speed with duplex the M506x only slows to 36ipm.
  • The M506 takes almost 30% less desk space than the P3015 (and it wasn't big).
  • The M506x Control panel is now a 4.3 inch (10.9cm) colour touchscreen
  • Where the P3015 could take two extra optional trays the new machine can build into a floor-standing tower - a small alternative to the M605 perhaps.

A new feature that a lot of printers now have is a large colour display to help navigate through the menus and make it easier to customise a printer to a "workflow". So if Workflow solutions are on your agenda go for the M506X with the touchsreen, and extra tray.

And another new feature is wireless print direct from mobile devices - without accessing the network - but this does require purchase of either the M605x model or adding the HP Jetdirect 2900nw Print Server or 3000w NFC/Wireless Direct Accessory.

You might notice that HPs fondness for making points then qualifying them with a footnote. Presumably they have a marketing team that want brevity and a legal team determined on precision. Or maybe they just don't realise that reservations make specification unreadable.

Specification

HP's upper-mid range A4 mono laser printer. Up to 43 pages per minute for A4 (36ipm with duplex). Small footprint, low purchase cost and black and white print at resonable prices.

High capacity cartridges:

  • 9,000 page capacity giving a print cost around 1.5p per page
  • 18,000 page capacity giving a print cost of 1 p per page

An Embedded Web Server and diagnostic software allows remote troubleshooting.

These printers have an exceptionally small footprint for machines that provide such big cartridge and fairly high speed. They are exceptionally expandable for a small machine as well turning into a floor-standing tower system if needed.

Control:

HP_LJ-M506 Control Panel

A key distinction between this printer and it's predecessor the P3015 is the introduction of a better control panel.

The LJ-M506n and LJ-M506dn have a 4-line colour display with lights and a keypad.

The M506X has a touchscreen control panel with it's "home" button.   This should be much more intuitive for users and it can act as a starting point for adding document management capabilities that are accessible through the printer as well as via PCs.

M506n (F2A68A) M506dn (F2A69A)

Control panel 4-line color LCD; 19 buttons (Cancel job, Up and Down arrow, Select, Back, Home, 12-key and Help); 3 LED indicator lights (Attention, Ready, Busy)

M506x (F2A70A)

4.3-in (10.9 cm) touchscreen with color graphics and a home button.

The keypad on the M506n and M506dn allows them to be used easily wherever PIN enabled print or pull-printing are required.   The touchscreen gives bit of incentive to trade up to the M560X.

HP bring out a new control panel design theme every so often and a new version seems to be underway. they say: Add new features—such as workflow and security enhancements—without having to purchase new hardware. A consistent user interface and menu design across all HP FutureSmart devices—including the HP LaserJet Enterprise M506 series— makes the user experience intuitive and familiar.

Embedded Web Server :The printers all have a built in web-server that in many ways gives better and more comprehensive control over the printer to authorised users.

  • HP Utility for Mac OS X:
  • HP Utility for Windows:

An interesting new feature is that errors can give a QR code that links to a help page. HP say:

Quickly troubleshoot technical issues using innovative, cloud-based help services that are relevant and up to date. Easily solve problems from your PC or mobile device. Response (QR) code on the printer’s control panel links directly to specific troubleshooting pages with instructions that are easy to follow.

That could well save people searching for the user guide!

Security Features:

Printers were once output devices that were only a security risk if the paper they spat out was lying around. Paper is too easily seen.   Printers could be dumb things that don't even have a microprocessor - but that is never true now - a printer could be a spy.

That problem with unclaimed reports lying around can be cured by secure printing with a PIN. The cost is a printer with a hard disk to store reports untill the user is present. Welcome to the war of security versus simplicity.

Laser printers have usually had intelligent formatters that are network shared. In principle a printer could host malicious software.   Clever printers could pose more risks, of course.

HP tightened up printer software security some years ago when they switched to using signed firmware upgrades. There definitely had been the possibility that printer software could be used for an attack. In 2015 there still seem to be websites out there offering drivers and firmware of dubious provenance - all we can do is advise you to avoid them.

Data moving across a network can be intercepted. On a small business network that probably isn't an issue; intercepting printer traffic isn't how they would steal your data - more like copy the lot to USB. On a large network some kinds of printer traffic should be secure.

The Hardware Integration Pocket (HIP) is nothing more than a plastic receptacle with a USB connector. But as HP say:

HP’s cost-effective solution for hardware upgrades—the Hardware Integration Pocket (HIP) 9 —allows you to integrate optional secure mobile printing or authentication solutions, such as card and badge readers, to the M506dn and M506x models.

HP have chosen to miss the HIP off the specification for the M506n - this is odd as it can't be an expensive feature - a recess in a plastic moulding and a short USB lead. Still it's a persuader to buy the duplex model.

HP's 24 page brochure has an entire section on Security - Appendix A: Security features.

Other points include a firewall, blacklist and whitelist, encrypted network traffic and the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). HP seem to have the full corporate security angle covered - something you can tick off on you PCI DSS compliance !

HP say in some brochures A FutureSmart service pack update may be required to activate security features. We couldn't tell you which don't come implemented in the printer as bought; it's proprietary software. Perhaps it's just legal flummery?

Copying Capabilities:

This is a plain printer.

A similar engine with multifunction print / scan / copy ability is the LaserJet Enterpise MFP M527.

MMA_top-right-logo

Printer brands might overstate the robustness of printers. This has two merits from their point of view:

  • It makes their offerings look good.
  • and it may make people trade down to a lesser printer that costs less to buy but uses more expensive cartridges.

If you intend to print anything like 150,000 pages in a short time look at the M605 with its bigger cartridges and easy to change fuser.

Duty Cycle:

HP have historically given a durability rating as a "duty cycle", in this case it is "up to 150,000 pages (letter/A4)" but the brochure doesn't say whether that is per month (we think so). HP have taken to citing a more realistic Recommended monthly page volume (RMPV): In this case it's 2,000 pages to as high as 7,500 pages.

If your monthly print needs are 7,000 pages per month that will be a cartridge every 6 weeks or so.   Save money on cartridges; look at the bigger printers.

front with labels

rear with labels
  • M506 all models have a print speed, up to 45 pages per minute - 43ppm with A4 paper
  • Duplex print speed up to 36 impressions per minute (34ipm with A4 paper.

A lot of print runs are three or four pages so as well as the raw print speed note how long it will take before the printer sets off. HP claim the printer will be running in under 10 seconds:

  • From ready: as fast as 5.9 seconds, letter (6.0 seconds, A4)
  • From sleep: as fast as 8.1 seconds, letter/A4

Printer speed used to be a big sales point in the olden days when 8 pages per minute was normal and it might take a minute to print a half page graph. A fast printer could get two copies of that report out before a meeting. Speed is generally less of an issue now that most office-quality printers work at more than 30 pages per minute.

As a point of comparison the M604 runs at 50ppm, M605 at 55ppm and M606 at 62ppm with A4 paper. However the M606 does slow down to 41ipm with duplex print runs so it may not be that much faster then the M506.

the M506 is very much faster than the P3015 on a duplex print run.

Print resolution Up to 1200 x 1200 dpi (Fine Lines)

Although HP make quite a fuss about their newly developed toners saving energy and insuring against counterfeits they don't say much in the brochure about print quality.

Ordinary laser printers are air-gap electrophotographic machines with an OPC photoconductor. True engine resolution is not usually above 1200dpi because of "dot gain" - the electric field around the laser contact point is quite large and often lacks "dot modulation",

Laser printers give "magazine quality" print and obviously with the M402 this is black and white only. If you want photographic or arthouse quality you need a colour inkjet and probably one with six or seven inks to give the required colour gamut. However you then have to contend with the inkjets endless demand for cartridges and temperamental printhead behaviour. Do yourself a favour and get a nice reliable laser printer for invoices and correspondence. (A printer like this one).

tower

The M506 in it's maximum configuration -three extra cassette feeder units and the cabinet stand.

Paper Handling:

As standard on the M506n and M506dn:

  • Tray 1 is a drop-down multipurpose tray at the front for envelopes transparencies etc equivalent to 100 sheets of paper.
  • Tray 2 is a slide in cassette in the base of the printer normally used for 550 sheets of paper.

As standard with the M506x:

  • Tray 3 is a cassette feeder unit that goes underneath the printer, it can be used to increase the plain paper capacity or to hold plain whilst cassette tray 2 holds letterhead

HP have taken a leaf out of Lexmark's book and added 50 sheets to the input tray capacity - so now a whole ream of paper can be added to a nearly empty tray in one go.

MMA_top-right-logo

In the print industry "duplex" means double sided print and a printer with a "duplexer" can do this automatically, usually by almost ejecting the page from the exit rollers but then reversing the paper movement, diverting it under the fuser and print station and re-inserting it into the feed rollers.   At one time this was unusual, now it is quite common even on low-cost home inkjet printers.

Of course you can get duplex print manually. Take the material that has printed, turn it over and put it through the machine again. That requires a manual intervention of course and it goes wrong annoyingly often. Auto duplex has the machine do it.

Print brands sometimes suggest that duplex can halve paper consumption but that is optimistic - there are too many 1, 3 and 5 page documents. Still it does make an appreciable difference.

Double sided print is one of those silent judgement points like injet v laser. Duplex documents might carry an aura of professionalism.

Duplex:

  • M506n   no duplex
  • M506dn duplex
  • M506X  duplex built in

Duplex is not something you can retrofit to these printers; buy without and that is permanent. On the other hand if you buy the models with duplex it does no harm if you don't use it - it is there it would come in handy.

A situations where duplex definitely isn't useful is machines used for labelling.

Processor:

Processor 1.2 GHz

Memory:

Memory 512 MB (expandable to 1.5 GB through 1 GB DDR3 SlimDIMM)

Storage Standard: 4 GB non-volatile storage, firmware encryption (AES 128 or AES 256) of customer/job data; Secure Cryptographic Erase

Optional Disk Memory

HP High-Performance Secure Hard Disk, minimum 500 GB; AES 256 hardware encryption or greater; Secure erase capabilities (Secure File Erase – Temporary Job Files, Secure Erase – Job Data, Secure ATA Erase – Disk)

The hard disk is required for things like PIN printing where jobs need to be stored.

HP mobile print icon

Print from a wide range of mobile devices.

Easily print documents, emails, PDFs, and more from iPhones® and iPads® as well as smartphones and tablets running iOS, Android version 4.4 or later, Windows® 8/10, or GoogleTM ChromeTM operating systems—generally no setup or apps required.

There’s no need to search through a long list of devices—automatically discover the nearest printer without accessing your corporate network.

Simply open and preview the content you want to print, select your printer, and hit Print. For mobile devices without built-in print support, users will first need to download the HP ePrint app or HP ePrint software. Enable 128-bit encrypted wireless direct printing and NFC touch-to-print from mobile devices—without accessing the network.

Security and user access settings—like 128-bit encryption and a configurable passphrase—can be easily set up with HP Web Jetadmin 17 or the HP Embedded Web Server.

The HP LaserJet Enterprise M506x comes with these features built-in, but the M506n and M506dn models can add them via an optional accessory.

HP JetAdvantage Mobile Print Solutions

Choose the right mobile Direct print printing options for your business.

Managed mobile print solutions: If you’re looking to deploy mobile printing across a printer fleet, HP offers server-based solutions that provide secure pull-printing, as well as advanced management and reporting capabilities. HP also provides options to integrate with third-party mobile device management solutions.

Interfaces:

Ordinary choices are the USB B Port and/or a Gigabit Ethernet port.

Input Connectivity: 1 Hi-Speed USB 2.0 device port;

Support Connectivity: 2 Hi-Speed USB 2.0 device ports, one at the side and one at the rear;

Optionally the printer can be expanded with two more internal USB ports.

The M506dn and M506X printers also have the "HIP" accessory plug in point (a USB plug in a plastic recess). This is intended for adding small things to the printer like ID card readers and even coin-op slots.

Note that HP don't supply a data cable with the printer. Few if any printer brands do.

Network:

  • M506n and M506dn have Gigabit wired Ethernet as standard. There is an optional accessory for wireless print.
  • M506x has both the Gigabit wired Ethernet and 802.11b/g/n wireless networking built in.   Wireless direct printing, NFC touch-to-print, HP ePrint, Apple AirPrint, Mopria-certified 30 , Google Cloud Print 2.0,Mopria-certified

There are no non-network versions of these printers. Although networking isn't always wanted it is frequently useful. In terms of mass production it is probably cheaper to put the network chip onto the formatter than to have a version without - if you don't want to use it then don't plug it in. The chip will switch to a low power mode.

There are no expansion slots either: all expansion is via USB. So far as we know there is no USB/Ethernet adaptor approved for use if you want to dual-host the printer or to substitute for the embedded Ethernet if it has failed. Failure of embedded Ethernet has been a rare occurrence but not unknown - people trip over cables and lightning strikes sometimes damage ports.

MMA_top-right-logo

There are lots of jobs where being able to print direct from mobile devices could be useful -field service of machinery, gardening, agriculture, medicine, policing all suggest examples.

Exchange between devices is a developing field and one HP could do well in. They have the R&D abilities that were the basis of their success in instrument making - which was an "integration" task. The only printer maker with broader interests is Samsung but their product lineup on printers lacks HP's polish and at present they don't seem to have a workflow product that stacks up.   HP have the ability to make mobile print work and keep development moving.

Mobile Print:

Print brands are enthusiastic about the idea of mobile print, its a new direction and something older products can't do very easily. Moving content to a PC to print it is clumsy. Mobile print might prove popular with field service engineers for instance - they can get diagrams on a tablet, tap it on the printer and have a bigger, clearer copy they can make notes on.

Environmental Impact

It is difficult to regard computer printers as entirely an environmental good thing.   But then the objections would apply to paper used for handwritten notes and sketches, newspapers, magazines and books.

The biggest single waste stream is paper which dwarves everything else in terms of weight - a 10,000 page HP cartridge weighs about a kilo but the four boxes of paper it will print weigh in at ten kilos. Most computer printed paper is ephemeral, it isn't used again after a few days. However it is often archived and it is certainly arguable that the idea of a "paperless office" has been around for a long time and that people wouldn't print if they didn't feel a need. In the UK about 80% of office paper is said to get recycled as other paper products, so the environmental impact of paper may not be that bad.

The main environmental impact of printers is that they generate a pile of waste cartridges. Print cartridges were originally intended to make printers easier for non-experts to deal with. The HP / Canon style of cartridge wraps all the works likely to fail up in one plastic box. When something goes wrong, change the cartridge.

A potential problem is that printer brands use cartridges to generate almost all of their revenue and over time have cut cartridge sizes and raised prices to make more money, regardless of making more waste.

These cartridges are much better than average because they are significantly bigger. Some small laser printers have a cartridge life that lasts just 1,000 pages. These last 9,000 or 18,000 pages.

What HP Say

Work with the future in mind HP FutureSmart Firmware lets you upgrade this printer on your schedule, whenever solutions advance.

HP Services Make sure your imaging and printing investments are protected with Care Pack, part of HP Care. Pick your package of services to keep your printer running and your business moving. Now your office can spend less time trouble-shooting and more time getting things done.

Service:

If you want service that goes beyond warranty in providing an onsite fix in a timely manner or a that lasts beyond a year you might like to buy an HP Care Pack.

Many sites with skilled IT personnel choose to look after this kind of printer themselves, doing fault identification, triage and parts replacement as needed. Note that as often happens with new models we can't guarantee a supply of parts such as fusers in the first year, they are normally released to the "channel" as warranty runs out.

Warranty:

The 20 page leaflet says: Warranty One-year, return to bench but it's document number is 4AA5-9352ENUC, August 2015, Rev. 1 . ENUC means English, US and Canada. Its informative, but warranty differs by region - which is one reason prices differ.

HP's UK website says all warranties are 1 year onsite. With small printers they will often just send plug-in parts or swap the machine out. offsite
