HP Say:

10.00.35

Description

An incompatible supply is in use.

Recommended action

Install the correct HP print cartridge for this product (CE390A or CE390X).

NOTE: The CE390X cartridge is not compatible with the HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 M601.

The message would presumably be generated by a wrong report from the cartridge memory chip

Although the HP service manual lists this error as a possibility there is no evidence from Web research that it happens at all. The only listings found were people cutting and pasting the service manual.

The error probably exists for situations where colour cartridges might get swapped around; this is sometimes done in field service to prove which cartridge is defective. However this is a mono printer.

The message might have uses in mono printers.   M601 and P4014 cartridges are physically almost identical except for some keyways on the cartridge nose. It seems possible to make a cartridge that would fit both machines. People with a population of both might well find that useful. If there is any internal difference then the only identifier would be the chip.

A possible trigger for the error is a "clone" chip that doesn't quite manage to do the job properly. HP and other print brands defend their territory by using complex encryption to prevent refillers and remanufacturers being able to work seamlessly with their machines. This inspires a small but active counter-cypher industry to crack the chips and make clones. It's a significant cost to the recyclers - but then the print brands have become dependent on cartridge sales.
