Repairing the ADF on the HP LaserJet M1210 series Multifunction printers.

The HP LaserJet Professional M1212 has an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) so that it scan a series of pages in one easy action.

Some ADF mechanisms get heavy use, and the pickup roller and pad will then wear out and give frequent misfeeds. An ADF is prone to misfeeds anyway, because it will be faced with different qualities of paper depending on who created the document that needs scanning.

The parts most likely to wear out are easily changed; the rollers are in the ADF lid and the pad unclips.

This simple design might have a cost, however. If people drop the ADF lid rather carelessly the cogs in the lid drop to heavily on the cog of the ADF core and one or other get bent and won't mesh properly.

The scanner and core can be changed, however to do that the left hand side has to be taken off the printer, exposing power circuits.

Note that the case may be / should be marked "No user serviceable parts inside. Authorised service personnel only". Fatal voltages and a laser scanner that could damage human sight are exposed.

This page is intended to help service technicians and end-of-life disposal. A much fuller treatment can be found in HP's M1130/M1210 Service Manual Part Number: CE841-90985 Edition 1, 4/2010. Illustrations here are derived from that document - we think that is a fair use because it helps sell HP Parts and meet their environment policy.

If the fault looks as though it goes beyond a simple paper feed issue then a more major part of the scanner assembly may need replacing.

It doesn't seem necessary to take the scanner off the printer to replace parts although HP's service pictures reproduced here show that, and they say to do so in the manual. Use your own judgement.

Replacing the ADF core or parts of the scanner itself do need the printer left hand side removing to unplug the wires from the formatter. A ground screw has to be removed on top of the printer as well.

There is a tab alongside the hinge that needs releasing to fully open the ADF cover.

Remove the ADF Lid - Step 2

Use a flat-blade screwdriver to release a hinge pin.

ADF Assembly Complete

The ADF assembly is supposed to be available complete, as are the core and the tray.

Remove the ADF Lid - Step 3

Slide the ADF cover towards the rear of the printer so that it comes away from the rear hinge pin and lifts away.

Remove the ADF Core- step 3

Free The ADF control cable from its path through the printer, scanner and ADF plastics.

As already mentioned, the cable comes from the formatter board and to gain access it will be necessary to remove the left hand side of the printer. This is a matter of one screw, a tag at the rear and one underneath as outlinedhere.

The ADF core is held in the scanner body by hinge pins towards it's nose. Flexing the bracket of the core upwards whilst squeezing the sides should release it.

The ADF core should lift up and out of the scanner.

Removing the ADF Tray

ADF TrayRemove the ADF Tray

The tray assembly is held in place by two screws; HP note that the spring latch clips that hold the tray in place are not captive and warns not to lose them.

Remove the ADF Tray

The tray is then held by a tab. Push the tab clear with a screwdriver.

Remove the ADF Tray

With the tab on the front released rotating the tray up and round will disengage the tab on the back so that the tray lifts clear.
