HP LaserJet Professional M1210 Series Printers
The HP LaserJet Professional M1210 Series Multifunction Printer is an A4 mono laser printer / fax / copier / scanner aimed at individuals and small offices. It is based on theP1102 which is just a printer.
The HP LaserJet Pro M1132 MFP sacrifices the fax capability, the 35 page ADF and the LCD display - so its cheaper and perhaps more suited to home use.
TheM1217nfw MFP is a 2012 addition to the line that has HP e-Print and wireless networking as well.
- For home and small offices the M1212 has the convenience of network sharing - but without the potential struggle and risk of wireless networking.
- The 35 page automatic document feeder (ADF) will sometimes prove useful in business - but note that these printers don't have automatic duplex so they won't deal with copying double-sided reports very elegantly.
If a straight-forward printer is preferred look at theP1100 series .
These printers are all based on the CanonLBP6000engine, first seen in the P1005 and similar printers. HP's use of the engine is quite different here; creating a personal copier and printer in a convenient, small, low cost unit with contemporary styling.
HP have chosen to make the M1130 and M1210 series printers in several variants, aimed at regional markets. The EMEA version is the M1212nf. There may be firmware variations.

Printers that take the CE285A
cartridge are intended for the US and European markets.
Printers that take the CE388A
cartridge are intended for emerging Asian markets. Apparently they use a less demanding and less precise toner.
There is more on cartridges below and here .
The firmware will differ between models and so cartridges intended for one market may not work in the other. Otherwise the difference between the printers is a fine-tuning of model to market conditions.
Colour:
These are mono
- black only - machines. Mono printers retain advantages for business printing in being simple, reliable and cheap to run. For business process printing - statements, invoices, remittance advice and shipment notes they remain unbeatable.
The scanner is colour - there is very little saving in cost to the manufacturers in making a mono scanner - and although the printer can't make colour copies it can scan colour documents into the computer.
Control:
The M1210 has an LCD display panel for messages which makes the printer more self-explanatory for use in an office - and easier to set up on a network.
There is more detail on operation of the control panel here .
- Numeric keypad for entering fax numbers an numeric values.
- Cursor keys and OK for stepping through and selecting menu entries.
- Back Arrow key (arrow looping counter-clockwise) for exiting menus.
- Cancel key (a cross) Cancels the print, copy or fax job.
- Send Fax key (phone with page) send a fax to the number.
- Copy key (page-arrow-page) make a copy.
- Setup key (a spanner) Menu entries for overall setup - see below
- Copy Settings (menu with arrow) Quick setups for copies.
- Dark/Light button (circle with shade) Quickly change the darkness or lighness of the current job.
- Fax redial (phone with backarrow) Redials the number used for the last fax job.
3 LED indicator lights (Attention ,Ready ,Toner low )
Two Line LCD character display for status information, menus and messages.
Menus
The menus are availble by pressing the setup (spanner) key. There are menu entries for:
- Phone Book : open the fax phone book

Error Messages
One of the benefits of the M1210 series is that it has a small screen, so it can give clear error messages.
22 Scanner Error. Flatbed scanner problem. Check that the scanner head moves along it's track.
50.X Fuser Error . Try turning the printer off, then on again. If this doesn't work the fuser heater may need replacing.
52 Scanner Error. Error 52 is the laser-scanner not the flatbed-CIS scanner. The laser scanner uses a semiconductor laser and a polygon mirror to scan the image as the OPC drum turns.
Comm.error. Fax communication error. check the fax phone line is working properly and plugged in.
Device error Press [OK]. Warning message. Print might be incorrect, inspect it for problems.
Door Open . Close the cartridge door properly to resume printing. The door has a safety switch to stop laser scanning and fusing and maintain user safety.
Engine comm. Error. Try turning the printer off, then on. Fault between the formatter and engine controller, or possibly the PSU. Try an engine test (open and close the cartridge door five times in rapid succession).
Fax recv. error. Receiving a fax failed or an error in the fax message wasn't corrected.
Fax Send error. Unable to send a fax. Confirm the phone line is working and the number can receive faxes.
Jam in <location> - Open door and clear jam. A paper jam is suspected, possibly under the cartridge.
Load tray 1 PLAIN <SIZE> - Cleaning Mode. The printer is in a cleaning cycle. HP recommend a laser-printer rated transparency or plain paper. Press OK to start the cleaning cycle.
Load tray <TYPE>, <SIZE> . The tray is empty. Load the tray with the required paper.
Manual duplex - Load tray1 Press [OK]. The user should turn the page over, print side down top-edge first then press OK to get double sided print.
Manual feed <SIZE>, <TYPE> Press [OK]. The printer is set for manual feed of a page. Load the tray and press [OK].
Memory is low Press [OK] . Not enough memory to process the job. Wait for one job to complete before sending another.
Misprint Press [OK] . An error that might affect the output happened.
No paper pickup Press [OK]. Paper failed to move from tray. RL1-2593 may be excessively worn
Page too complex Press [OK]. Page details are too complex to be handled by the drivers or print memory.
Paper jam clear paper path .Printer did not pick up from input tray.
Settings Cleared. The printer cleared down settings from a job.

Print Speed:
Black (A4): Up to 18 ppm; First Page Out Black: As fast as 8.5 sec (from Auto-Off).Print Resolution:
Maximum engine resolution 600 dpi
HP say :
- "Print Technology Resolution" : FastRes 600; FastRes 1200

HP don't say whether FastRes 1200 has any impact on print speed. The printer has a moderately powerful processor and RAM for a mono machine and formatting is host-based. If printing slows in high resolution or with complex print jobs that might be the computer rather than the printer.
Duty Cycle:
Monthly duty cycle A4: Up to 8000 pages. The print cartridges are rated for 1600 pages so this printer isn't intended for frequent or long print jobs. Look to the Pro-300 and Pro-400 ranges for better economy on long run print jobs.
Recommended-monthly-page-volume from 250 to 2000 pages per month. With a page volume much below 100 cartridges might life-expire before the toner has been used.

One of the benefits of HP Mono laser printers is simplicity - just a single print cartridge to change.
CE285A HP LaserJet CE285A Black Print Cartridge.
CE285AD HP LaserJet CE285A Black Print Cartridge Dual Pack.
The print cartridge is a single piece design containing toner, developer, drum and waste collection blade and receptacle. Average cartridge yields 1600 standard pages. Declared yield value in accordance with ISO/IEC 19752.
The CE285A cartridge holds just 1600 pages worth of toner and its price gives these printers a rather high UK street price per copy of £ 2.6p (US official pricing is 4.25 cents per page).
Toner formulation is 55% Styrene acrylate copolymer, 45% ferrite and 10% Wax according to the MSDS. The high percentage of ferrite with its magnetic qualities apparently improves image sharpness.
For Asian emerging markets HP ships a different cartridge, the CE388A which uses a less exacting toner. Yield is the same.
Printers ship with a 700 page reduced capacity starter cartridge.
Fuser:
The fuser is available as:
- Just the fuser film assembly - the heater and film as one part.
- The fuser paper delivery assembly - the remaining parts of the fuser

RM1-7733 Fuser paper delivery assembly (110 V) RM1-7733-000CN
As usual the 220 Volt fuser is used in the UK, Europe and much of the rest of the world. The 110/120Volt fuser is used in the US, Canada and Japan and will probably be a special order outside those regions.
Maintenance Kit:
Possibly because there isn't strictly a fuser and only one each of pickup roller and pad there doesn't seem to be an official maintenance kit listed at present.

Service:
These are comparatively low cost printers so when there is a problem people will want to deal with it in-house rather than pay the call-out for an experienced technician. Here are some hints.
When there is a problem with printing check that the power light is on. Problems with printers often turn out to be power turned off. Check the power cable seating, its an IEC C14 type and they need pushing home. UK power cables have a built in fuse, check the fuse or swap the cable. Check the USB cable.
A frequently tried fix for computer problems is to turn it off, wait, then turn it back on. Turning the power off forces machines back to their default state. Turn off both printer and computer then turn the printer on and finally the computer.
Checking the documentation may also help. Printers ship with a quick setup guide and a user guide but the CD often gets lost.
HP LaserJet M1130/M1210 MFP Series User Guide is available online
CE841-90904 - User Guide Product user guide. CE841-90904
The service manual for the HP CLJ_Pro_M1130 and CLJ_Pro M1210 does not ship with the printer, it may be reserved for engineers who have attended a course. However manuals can often be found online. The manual is:
Part number: CE841-90985 Edition 1, 4/2010
Many laser printer faults can be identified because the way the machine works uses a succession of different sized roller. Those rollers leave characteristic marks down the page.

Problem Solving
These are fairly basic mono printers so most faults will be cleared by changing the print cartridge. If that doesn't clear the fault put the new cartridge back in its light-proof wrappings and in the box for later use.
To test that the basic print mechanism does work there is an engine test. The engine test is set away by opening and closing the cartridge loading door 5 times at roughly 2 second intervals. The printer will produce a page of thin vertical stripes - not very elaborate but a good basic test within the capabilities of the engine management chip.
Paper Jams are likely to be a failure to pick up, since the printer has a fairly simple paper path. Make sure the paper is held under the pickup roller and pad in the back of the machine by the paper stop. If the printer frequently fails to feed or feeds more than one sheet the pickup roller and pad need cleaning or replacing.
Bad Print that is too light, too dark or uneven on the page is likely to be an issue with the print cartridge or drum. Try shaking the cartridge (over a washable surface in case of spills) and check both cartridge and inside the printer for spilled toner. Clean cartridge and printer surfaces paying attention to metallic contacts. There is more on cleaning here.
